Humane Officer Derek Wiliams has been toying with the idea of asking out Brian O’Donogue since the veterinarian started working at the Pet Rescue Center two years ago. So why hasn’t he made his move? It’s complicated… but it has something to do with the fact that Derek occasionally likes to run around on four legs instead of two. Recovering from an abusive relationship and hiding supernatural abilities of his own, Brian takes a chance and agrees to go on a date with Derek. The ensuing relationship is better than either of them could have hoped-until a rogue wolf shifter attacks Brian while he’s walking his dogs. The abrupt attack forces Derek to confront his feelings, but the danger isn’t over. The rogue shifter is out there, and he’s hunting them.
REVIEW:
Moving away from his sheltered upbringing and into the busy, and oftentimes upsetting, job as a Humane Officer, was quite a shock for wolf shifter Derek Williams. Amongst the anger and the upset that follows him around almost daily, however, is his one port of calm in the storm, veterinarian Brian O’Donogue. Derek has had it bad for the other man ever since they started working together two years ago but the fear of revealing who and what he really is has kept Derek from asking the other man out. Brian has been in love with Derek ever since he first he set eyes on him but has always thought the sexy male was straight and when Derek finally works up the nerve to ask Brian out, sparks fly. When Brian is attacked and Derek’s secret comes out, however, Derek figures he’s lost the one man he’s always wanted but unbeknownst to him, Brian has a secret of his own…
I always enjoy starting a new series as it usually sets the tone for all the books that come after it. This was a fairly easy book to get through with enjoyable characters and just enough information to make me interested in reading more. Derek was what I think of when I envision your typical wolf shifter with the addition of working to control his shifting when he’s angry or stressed. I liked him overall but really, there were no real surprises for me when it came to his character. Brian, on the other hand, wasn’t what I think of when I hear the word psychic and I liked that he wasn’t the stereotypical embodiment of that ability. I thought he used it well and to his full advantage both within his profession and in his relationship with Derek.
The story itself was fairly straight forward with a little bit of drama in the form of the rogue wolf but there wasn’t a terrible amount of angst, which was nice, and I thought that Derek’s reveal as a shifter, and Brian’s response to it, was well done; it really showed the scope of Brian’s character, as well. One thing I do wish I’d gotten was a bit more depth to the characters; I liked them, don’t get me wrong, but there just didn’t seem to be enough interaction with them one on one outside of the bedroom where I could really get a more meaningful impression of them.
Overall, this made for a nice set up for the rest of the series and I’m interested to see what is explored next. Poe in particular, and the work he does, is something I hope gets written about in one of the following books as I’d love to read his story. If you like shifter stories and are looking for a new series, you might enjoy this one; I liked it and there was certainly enough of interest to make me want to read more. 🙂

I’m kinda addicted to this series. And yes, Poe gets his own story. As does someone else who made an appearance in this book… 😉
