Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Suzey Ingold, author of Speakeasy. Hi Suzey, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself, your background, and your current book.
Thank you for having me! I’m a writer and linguistics student, currently based in Edinburgh. I’ve been writing for years and had my first short story, The Willow Weeps for Us, published in 2015, in the Summer Love anthology from Duet Books. Speakeasy is about a recent Yale graduate who must discover what he really wants when he meets the owner of a unique Midtown speakeasy in 1920s Manhattan.
Character interview—Heath Johnson
What do you find attractive in a man?
I admire confidence in anyone but I find it particularly attractive in a man—confidence, though, not arrogance. Add along long with that a caring nature, a strong pair of shoulders, and beautiful eyes, and I’m already half in love.
I must admit, the first thing to capture my attention was his great shoulders. Now, let me explain: he had his face turned from me! I was immediately struck by how handsome he was, and it was a welcome distraction from how uneasy I was feeling otherwise at the time.
Do you think you’ll insist the author visits you again?
Oh, I’ll certainly make a case for it. Me and Art’s life together is just beginning; I don’t know that it’ll be too difficult to convince her of that… She has a bit of a soft spot for the two of us, after all.
Before you met Art, what was your ideal man?
Well, I suppose he was blue-eyed, fair-haired, with a penchant for bow ties that matched his suspenders… You’ve got me: my ideal was just Julian. How things have changed! I’ve known Julian so long that I sometimes find it funny that I ever thought of him that way. He’s almost like family.
You’re going out for dinner. What’s your favorite food?
If I had my way, we’d skip straight to dessert for I have an awful sweet tooth. However, Art would say that that would be inappropriate and that his appetite, unlike mine, cannot be satisfied with sugary delights alone. I do love roast duck, though no restaurant could cook it as well as Louis used to do for my family and me.
Heath swallows, playing over an idea that had formed shakily in his head after he saw Frankie, since Art walked through that door and possibly longer without him being fully conscious of it. “Maybe it’s time I was honest. Tell them that I don’t want to marry Ginny or work with my father. Let the pieces fall where they may.”
“You would do that?”
“If it meant being with you, I would do anything.” Heath sits up and the sheets fall to pool around his waist. “I know what I want, now. And it’s you and whatever a future with you brings.”
