REVIEW:
Mermaids and Mistletoe – 4 hearts
What a great story. To start with the heroine thought she was going to have to endure a day on the beach with holiday makers dressed up in all kinds of outfits. But then her friends surprise her with a cruise – a two-day lesbian cruise, no less!
So off she heads with her friends, intent on enjoying herself but secretly wanting nothing more than to curl up with a good book. With her friend’s encouragement they head to a shop to try on clothes. When she convinces them to leave her to it in the seemingly deserted shop, she realizes she can’t undo the dress she has on… then a reflection in the mirror catches her off guard. From that point the heat turns up. The sex scenes were delicious and our heroine discovered Christmas wishes can come true.
Pumpernickel – 4.5 hearts
In this story the heroine, Libby, is a writer. A frustrated and disgruntled one at that. After an outburst over another rejection and self-doubt taking over, her Mistress literally takes her to hand. This works in two ways, by distracting Libby and giving her something to work with. For a short story I found myself totally connected to both characters. Mistress was fair but firm. Libby was compliant with a touch of spunk; I guess you could call her a brat. I’d love to read a full-length story featuring Miriam and Libby. Hint, Hint, Ms Bishop.
Hooked – 3.5 hearts
Wow, crochet classes with a difference, what a great idea. Wouldn’t it be so much more exciting making covers for sex toys, rather than teapots? Once class is over Mercy’s mind wanders to the bakery across the parking lot, and her friend Carly. In her musing she mentions ‘that book’ which is like a red flag to me, so I may have huffed a little at that point, lol. Moving on, Carly makes her way to Mercy’s and lays things on the line. “I’ve been waiting around for you for two years, Mercy Devereux. Since you won’t take the lead I will.”
I have no problem with BDSM and a good spanking, see above review, however in this instance I found the character going from I’ll wait for two years to taking charge, giving out orders, spanking and being called Mistress, a little jarring. However, this is definitely not unheard of when it comes to short stories.
Derby Girls – 4 hearts
I certainly got an education of the ins and outs of roller skating while reading this story. If the author hasn’t been a derby girl herself, she did a wonderful job of her research. The story really came to life and I enjoyed it. The heroines had been estranged so this story is heavier on angst than the others. Once they hit the showers the locker room steamed up and it wasn’t only from the hot water.
Mosaics and Mermaids – 3.5 hearts
This was my least favorite story of the collection. I couldn’t connect with the characters or reconcile their actions. A central part of the plot should have pulled at my heartstrings but due to not being able to comprehend the fallout, which seemed to occur due to miscommunication, I found myself unmoved. The erotic scene was okay until the wtf moment I had.
I’m sure the HEA was supposed to come across as sweet, but what occurred happened way to give me any happy feels. In a nutshell I think this story tried to be too much given the short length.
