Remember the notorious author threat? ”I’m going to write you into my book and kill you off.” Describe how you would kill off this person. In the most amazing and personal way possible.

I had a book, awful guy, who was afraid of bats. Hated them, so I’d have him the character I based on him, attacked by bats and probably catch rabies and doe a horrible, painful death. See, never piss me off. J

 

What are you working on now? What is your next project?

Currently I am between books. But the next story I will be working on is the third Day and Knight story. I already know that things are going to get very interesting and that Day’s brother isn’t necessarily all Day thinks he is.

 

Is there one subject you would never write about as an author? What is it?

Never say never. But things like incest are definitely on that list.   They hold no fascination for me. If I’m going to write about a topic, I have to be interested in it. It’s also unlikely I will write a BDSM story, but for a different reason. I feel I don’t know enough about the subject in order to write it well.

 

Have you ever had writer’s block? What is your best cure if you have? Or how do you keep it at bay?

I’ve been very lucky. I haven’t experienced writer’s block. There have been times when ideas are in short supply, but I keep working and talk to my friends. It isn’t long before the ideas start to flow.

 

What movie do you love to watch over and over? Which one scares you so much you can’t sleep?

I never watch scary movies, but there is one moving I’ve seen a ton of times. Gladiator. If it’s on, I will invariably watch it. Don’t ask me why because I really don’t know.

What has been the toughest criticism given to you as an author? What has been the best compliment?

The toughest criticism I received was from an online friend who said that one of my stories didn’t have enough drama.   However the good thing to come out of that was that she and I were able to discuss it and she helped me understand her point of view. The best compliment was from a man who said that one of my stories was the last one he and his now deceased partner read together. (It made me cry)

 

How important are names to you in your books? Do you choose the names based on liking the way it sounds or the meaning? Do you have any name choosing resources you recommend?

Names are very hard because I try not to reuse them. I like the names to have a certain feel. Hard edged characters should have edgier names. Generally I go for how they sound. As for resources, I don’t have any. But if you have some, I’d love to hear about them.

“If we can smell them, they can scent us, so we’ll stay where we are for a moment.” Mikael inhaled again, pulling the scent of heaven from the air. He scented once again and his nose damn near jumped off his face and did some sort of happy dance. Mikael turned to Karl, wondering if he smelled it as well, but his brother scanned around on his usual protective alert. “Do you smell that?”

“What? All I smell are two wolves, and it’s getting stronger but I don’t see anyone yet.” Karl turned toward the restaurant. “They must be in there.” Karl stopped as Mikael stared at him. “What? You look like you do when Mom bakes her wild strawberry pie and you can smell it for miles.”

“This is better,” Mikael whispered as a surge of energy raced through him, settling in his now aching groin. Fuck, what the hell is this? His pants were achingly tight and his dick was about to shred the seams of his pants.

“What’s wrong with you? Your teeth are lowering and your eyes have gone feral,” Karl whispered. “It isn’t like you to lose control. What gives?”

“Fuck if I know,” Mikael whispered and inhaled through his mouth, trying anything to calm himself. His wolf wanted out badly, and Mikael was seconds from turning his head to the ceiling and howling to the heavens, which was not good and could not happen. He turned away and saw a sign for the restrooms. He didn’t say a word, just headed for them with Karl right behind him.

“What’s wrong with you? This meeting is important and you lose control now?”

“I just need a few seconds, that’s all. Stand outside and make sure everyone stays away. I’ll be right out.” Mikael pushed the door open and the scents of the bathroom, while clean, overwhelmed his nose and blocked out whatever had set him off. Strong scents were always hard on wolves, so none of them ever wore anything but what God gave them. All Mikael could come up with was that the scents the humans were wearing must have short-circuited his nose for a few minutes. He went to the sink and ran the cold water, splashing some on his face. He breathed normally and his wolf, while active, seemed to settle back down.

“I’m in control, and unless we want a disaster on our hands, I have to stay in control,” Mikael repeated to himself and his wolf for a few seconds. Both halves of himself had to be in agreement at a critical time like this. Once he was feeling better, Mikael left the restroom and stepped out into the lobby.

He scented cologne and deodorant from the humans and wrinkled his nose slightly before dismissing it. Then the sweet, earthy scent hit him again: human mixed with wolf, and earth, heaven, water, and fire all at once.

“Are you okay?”

“Yes. Let’s go. We have business to conduct.” He was going to do this come hell or high water. He led Karl to the restaurant and stepped inside. Instantly his gaze fell on two large men who met their gazes intently. The one had the warm, rich skin of a Native American. He slowly got to his feet and stood to the side of the other man. “Mother, help me,” Mikael whispered. The other man was broader, and as he got to his feet, it was obvious he matched Mikael in height, size, and strength. He was also stunning, with blond hair that reached his shoulders in light waves, but as soon as Mikael got a few steps closer, it was the eyes—as blue and deep as the clear summer sky—that damn near touched his soul. Those eyes were familiar; he’d seen them one time before. The Mother herself had shown them to him long ago. This was his mate, and he was truly royally screwed. Two alphas together would be like dropping gasoline onto a forest fire. They did not mix, and they would fight each other tooth and nail. This was totally fucked up. He inhaled, and his wolf bounded upward desperately trying to come forward. It took all the willpower he could muster to stop him and to keep his expression neutral as he stepped toward the two men.

 

Dirk is very much an outside kind of man. He loves travel and seeing new things. Dirk worked in corporate America for way too long and now spends his days writing, gardening, and taking care of the home he shares with his partner of more than two decades. He has a Master’s Degree and all the other accessories that go with a corporate job. But he is most proud of the stories he tells and the life he’s built. Dirk lives in Pennsylvania in a century old home and is blessed with an amazing circle of friends.
