Secrets in the Air
Flying is in Rhett O’Neil’s blood. And nothing makes this pilot fly higher than wrapping himself in his husband Kaden’s arms. He’s thrilled when his grandfather entrusts him with O’Neil Airways, the family’s charter airplane business. With a mix of humanitarian and corporate clients, Rhett plans a bright future where his success improves the world.
Elise, Rhett’s mother, begins offering advice to “help” her son through the transition into increased responsibility. As evidence surfaces that her words are escalating into devastating actions, the truth comes out about the death of Rhett’s sister Annabelle. Kaden has to race to protect his husband and himself from the consequences of the Secrets in the Air before it’s too late.
REVIEW:
Rhett and Kaden have been together for thirteen years. They were high school sweethearts, have been married for three years and after all this time they’re still madly in love. Rhett is a pilot for his grandfather’s aviation company and Kaden is a nurse. Although Rhett’s family has a ton of money Rhett and Kaden lead very normal lives in their simple suburban home, just the two of them and their cat. However all it takes is the announcement that Rhett’s grandfather Don is retiring and handing the company over to Rhett for all sorts of shit to hit the fan. Suddenly Rhett’s slimy parents try to wedge themselves back into his life, the FBI need his help and shady characters are popping up in the most unexpected places.
So firstly, established couples – yea or nay? In general I’d say no, not a fan. My reasoning for that is that if you take a couple who is meant to be living their HEA and the author creates plot worthy problems between them, at the end of the story, when all is peachy again, how am I meant to trust their new HEA?
Liz Borino is one of my exceptions when it comes to not wanting to read already established couples. This is the third of her books that I’ve reviewed and as with her Angel series I appreciate the way she handles the main characters’ relationship. The drama in the story comes from outside of the two men and the trust and belief that they have in their love shines through the whole story. No matter what the many (many, many) bad guys throw at them their faith in each other never falters and to be honest it was just absolutely beautiful to read. The sex in the story was either off page or non-explicit but in my opinion that just added a sense of sweetness to the MC’s relationship.
Plot wise I’ll admit you need to accept a hell of a lot of coincidences and a smidge of TSTL behavior but it is absolutely worth swallowing any disbelief. Honestly when the big surprise was revealed at the end I had a total “whatever” moment but at the same time I was thinking, this is the most perfect damn ending imaginable and I was fighting back those happy tears.
I feel pretty confident in recommending this book to readers who like a little action and a whole lot of romance. The twists and the suspense will keep you entertained but for me it’s Rhett and Kaden’s relationship that shines as the star of the story.
