REVIEW:
I really appreciated this story because the genre ( cowboys /ranch) is one of my prefered ones. I wanted to read this book very much and it did it not disappoint.
The story is a good read and it flows easily with so much emotion. It has two fantastic main characters in the big bearded foreman Baxter and the smaller Matt(y).
There is not very much drama in there but the things that are thrown in make sure that you don’t get bored for an instant and keeps you feeling emotionally involved. You don’t need to worry that the only thing you are reading about are the main characters though.
The family that took Matt in ( Ethel and Fred) create a sense of home and warmth and acceptance. The ranch hands are tough guys but not mean. You need to do your job and in the end you know there will come a time that you will fit in. And they show Matt that once you’re in, you’re in.
The character of Brian ( Matt’s cousin) is there in the role of a supportive, sweet, friend who knows about Matt’s preference and just helps him get around at the ranch. You sense the deep friendship between the two men.
Baxter is the silent one, the closeted one. Being older ( 44) and having settled into life as a single man with a girl who helps him out for appearances.
Still you feel as a reader the minute Matty and Baxter meet that there is something there. Where Matty wants to pursuit Baxter, sensing he is gay, Baxter just wants to run, not feeling secure enough to take the risk of being found out. He only dares to come to Matt when he is under influence of alcohol.
Help comes out of an unexpected corner when Matt is ready to give up and he sticks in there.
When he thinks he finally is there and Baxter is willing to give it a go it all seems to go wrong. With some jealousy, some help out of an unexpected corner ( someone who tells him not to give up ) and an accident with consequences, it all lead to a happy ending even sooner than Matty could have suspected with the unexpected / unknown help of Brian.
On a little critical note, I can understand when as a reader you might feel a bit put out. There was more possibility to the story and the sex could have been less .
For me I cannot do anything else than rate this at 4 stars and I hope that readers will enjoy this book as much as I did.
