The undersea archaeological dig that Harper has embarked on is fraught with problmes and danger. Harper and Stick share a special friendship and worry about each other at every turn, and when the worst happens beneath the sea, Harper is forced to choose between saving Stick and the pelora he’s fallen in love with.

At the end of the day, Michael surfaced with his entire team and climbed aboard. Areleous and Dimitris quickly joined him as he jumped from the ship to the tug where Harper and Stick sat.

“Nothing.”

Harper looked up at Michael from his low place on the tug and shielded his eyes with a hand. “Joules?”

Michael nodded. “Whatever is producing the energy is organic.”

Harper shook his head in wonder. He knew of no undersea organism that could produce that kind of kinetic energy.

“You guarantee it is safe to dive?” Areleous asked Michael bluntly.

“Barring buried munitions, I’ll stake my reputation on it.”

Harper fought to keep his expression empty and belie the anger that lurked within. “Not good enough.”

Michael pointed to the helicopter in the sky. “We used deep sounding and found no signature to a radius of five kilometers. That’s the best anyone can do.”

Still shielding his eyes with a hand, Harper looked up at Areleous. “Do you want to accept the risk?”

“That question is more appropriately asked of you and Dr. Gabriel, is it not, Dr. Kidd?”

Harper took in the man’s demeanor. He was genuinely concerned and looking for guidance. “Let me speak with Stick for a few moments?”

“Of course. We’ll make a call to the minister to see if the lab results are back from the morgue.”

Areleous, Dimitris, and Michael headed below deck and Harper turned to Stick. He looked at her now, serious, and she looked upset. “Talk to me.”

“I’m not worried about me, Harp. I’m up here. I’m worried about you.”

He blew a long breath. “We always said we’d go out with bang.”

She punched his shoulder. “That’s not funny.”

He smiled. She was the only one who really cared about him and he loved her for it. “I’ll be careful.” She looked down at the water, seemingly unconvinced, and he put an arm around her. “I will, Stick. I promise.”
