I Love Conventions by B.G Thomas

I Love Conventions

I just love going to conventions. Just this past weekend I went to ConQuesT, a big science fiction and fantasy con that is thrown here in Kansas City. This year the main guest was none other than George R.R. Martin, the author of the Song of Fire and Ice books—the very novels that the HBO show Game of Thrones is based on. I even got to sit on the official HBO traveling Iron Throne, cast from the original! It was incredibly fun.

I went to my first convention when I was like a freshman in high school. It was a Star Trek convention in Chicago—one that they were expecting a few hundred people. Instead it was a couple thousand. It was one of the first, and the very first that the entire original cast all got back together (except for Majel Barrett) since the cancellation of the series.

What a way to start conventions!

And in the years since I’ve gone to comic cons, vampire cons, World Cons, the World Horror Con and of course GayRomLit. I’ve met Ray Bradbury, Larry Niven, Connie Willis, Isaac Asimov and so many others, not even counting my favorite MM authors (who I won’t attempt to name).

And now I’m thinking it’s time for some fan run gay romance cons and I’d be thrilled to hear from you on the ones I should go to. I love meeting readers and also my fellow writers. It is also very soon that I might actually have the time to be able to get away because I am soon going to go from full time work to part time so I have more time to write!

There is nothing I enjoy more than sitting and chatting with the people who love the MM genre so much. I’ve had some incredibly powerful moments and meetings and met friends that are now incredibly close to me.

Maybe if I’m lucky I’ll be meeting you next! Please let me know the conventions you think are worth going to.

Until then!

Namasté,

B.G. Thomas

PS:  I have a new story coming out on June 1st! It’s called Until I Found You and I think you’re going to love it!

B.G. loves romance, comedies, fantasy, science fiction and even horror—as far as he is concerned, as long as the stories are character driven and entertaining, it doesn’t matter the genre. He has gone to conventions since he was fourteen years old and has been lucky enough to meet many of his favorite writers. He has made up stories since he was child; it is where he finds his joy.

In the nineties, he wrote for gay magazines but stopped because the editors wanted all sex without plot. “The sex is never as important as the characters,” he says. “Who cares what they are doing if we don’t care about them?” Excited about the growing male/male romance market, he began writing again. Gay men are what he knows best, after all. He submitted his first story in years and was thrilled when it was accepted in four days.

“Leap, and the net will appear” is his personal philosophy and his message to all. “It is never too late,” he states. “Pursue your dreams. They will come true!”
