BLURB:

The last thing cowboy Campbell Halley wants to do is go back to his tiny hometown during one of rodeo’s busiest seasons to help out an old friend. An old ex. Who he hasn’t spoken to since he left town. But when his momma lays on the guilt, Cam returns to his old stomping ground to do just that. But he doesn’t have to be happy about it.

Mitch Gonzales is on his last leg. He’s broke, he broke his back falling off a roof, and his daughters are growing up wild without a mom and trying to take care of him. So when Ca shows up, he’s uneasy, but he can’t look a gift horse in the mouth.

It doesn’t take long for Cam and Mitch to remember why they cared for each other so much all those years ago, but things are different now. Mitch has three little girls who could also fall in love with Cam and get their hearts broken, and Cam isn’t really the settling down type. Or is he?

REVIEW:

I am a fan of BA’s Cozy Cowboys and this was a touching one.

Campbell “Cam” Halley is successful rodeo roper. What he doesn’t need is his mama pressuring him to come home and help out a neighboring rancher/roofer who has has a string of bad luck. Mitch has fallen off a roof and broke his back. The Halley family has been helping out but she needs Cam to come back and help too. The problem isn’t that he can’t get away. He’s had a good year and already qualified for the NFR and she knows it. She also knows that the widower with three young girls and Cam used to be a “thing”. But that was a long time ago. Cam chose the rodeo and Mitch chose to marry fellow schoolmate/queer Allison. But Allison died of an aneurism and they managed to save Rachel via an emergency c-section. Five years later Cam returns to find Mitch in a bad way and those three little girls trying to do their best to help him. But can Mitch and Cam put aside the past and forge a new future?

This book is filled with hurt and comfort. Of trying your best but life sometimes just keeps pushing you down. About friendship and the support of found family. Of small town neighbors who look out for their fellow neighbors when they need help. Of second chances. And learning to help with children when you didn’t know that was your thing.

Mitch and Cam worked for me. And Mitch’s best friend Mark was a gem that I hope we hear more about and he gets his HEA too because he needs one bad and deserves it. But Cam’s Mom Pam was the one that really sealed this book for me. 7 kids, 14 grandkids so far and she still looked out for Mitch and his girls. Because her heart always has room for more. Plus I think she knew that Mitch was the one that got away from her Cam and she was fixin’ to fix it. I loved how Mitch and his girls just got folded into her family and Cam’s life. And those sweet girls. Bella tried so hard to be the lady of the house when her mama passed. Sweet little Rachel in her tutus and never having known her mom. But it was Sarah, the book reading “gothy princess” and animal lover that stole Cam’s heart.

Wonderful and touching book that warms your heart and reminds you how resilient people can be.
