Description
Grief sent Eliseo on a rescue mission to Dnara, hoping to regain his lost honour and purpose. An opportunity to work at VIMER – the Vihaan Infirmary for Medicine, Extraction and Research – gives him the chance to learn a skill he can take back to Vihaan. Lurking in the clinic is a medical anomaly: Malachi. Neither man nor beast, but a complex mix of abilities from both.
Ever since he was attacked as a teenager, Malachi has been in danger, a threat to others, and barely holding onto control. Volunteering for Waylan’s clinic is his only hope to tame the beast inside…until Eliseo arrives, and his beast wants to ravage him in a whole different way.
As they drift beyond patient and doctor, they stumble upon a secret that has been lost in Dnara. A secret that could have deadly consequences, not only for them but for everyone they love…until they realise, too late, some secrets should remain lost.

“The building is built like a warren to confuse the predators,” Xanthe said through a mouthful of noodles. “Every corridor is about twenty-feet long, with low-level grated lights on the walls, two-foot thick solid concrete, and doors made specifically to withstand an explosion or chemical spill.”
Quentin shot her a meaningful glance that Eliseo guessed was a warning not to scare the new guy. “It also keeps us safe. If the true monsters ever get out―like Pierce, or Malachi if he’s at his most volatile―we have time to enact emergency procedures. Their more primal instincts will have them focusing on scent rather than sight, and we make sure that’s not easy,” he explained, continuing his crash course education on the clinic. “The air ducts contain filters that remove outside scents and exude the mixed scents of the staff. That way, in emergency situations, the animal instincts focused on finding fresh air are completely useless and the fact they can scent us everywhere means they can’t single us out or find where we actually are.”
“Then you have time to escape the building,” Eliseo guessed, seeing the logic of confusing the senses, though it could easily work against the Vihaan employees and legitimate patients.
“Yes and no.” Xanthe bobbed her head with uncertainty, her ponytail swishing behind her. “Evacuation isn’t the best idea. I’m sure you’ve noticed this is a super shitty area. We scream bloody murder. and people shut their windows and lock their doors. It’s far safer to remain inside, since each section of the hospital has a secure door. You need to be a human with a fingerprint or palm print to open them, and they’re all protected against fires and lack of oxygen with multiple back-up emergency supplies.”
“Fascinating.” That fingerprint concept was both fascinating and worrying. Any patients who had shifted to their second form and were feral or manic couldn’t escape, but if Eliseo needed to tap into his m’weko strength, he’d need to shift between forms to access the doors. “What if a patient was to break out today?”
“We’d be golden,” Xanthe said, like she wasn’t concerned. “That door behind you is steel, with biometric locks; we have two back-up generators in this wing, and we have two beds and a fully stocked kitchen with a working phone and internet.”
Quentin took a bite of his biscuit and spoke with his mouth full, something they both did, but Eliseo figured probably meant they were used to not having much time to eat between work demands. “Half an hour ago, when I was out on ward checks and Xanthe was in the shower, that would have been a totally different story, but we’d have still been safe,” he admitted, though he didn’t seem worried. “The internal intercom system meant we could communicate with you, no matter where you were in the building, to help you get to safety. We’re never really shut off; we just have more to worry about than running out of food or oxygen.”
Eliseo laughed, full of nerves. “Like what?”
“Like being bitten,” Xanthe said around another mouthful of noodles.
“Or injected.”
“Eviscerated.”
Quentin nodded. “Mortally wounded and left to bleed out.”
“Infected with contaminated blood.” Xanthe grinned, enjoying their morbid game of worst case scenarios.
“Picked apart by eight escaped patients while trapped in the ward.”
“Then, there’s the worst case,” Xanthe added brightly, “all of the above, while still alive and dying a long, slow death from all the wounds and the infection in our blood.”
Quentin snorted, then turned to focus on Eliseo. “Regret taking the job yet?”
