Rory
I’m beginning to unravel.
When I meet Shai Burrows, he intrigues me enough that he has me stalking him, following him, watching him.
And when I find out he’s the one who robbed me, instead of handling business, it only makes me obsess over him even more.
But I can’t just let him get away with that, so we cut a deal. Shai will work off what he owes me, with his body, something he’s as eager about as I am. Because after that first touch, our worlds collide.
We get off on danger and seek trouble we’re not supposed to find. He craves my body, and though I don’t understand it, I know I want him by my side.
He’s my obsession, and I can’t help but want more.
In fact, I want it all.
And I’ll take it.
Our world is violent and chaotic. I’ve always reveled in that, but I’m risking it all now. I need to learn control because if I lose him, no one will be able to pull me back from the edge.
Content Warning: Sweet Obsession contains violence, drug use, discussion/memory of losing a parent to suicide (flashback), past scenes of child neglect, addiction (not a main character), discussion of human trafficking, and morally gray characters with no redemption arc. This is still a Riley Hart romance though, so none of this is heavy handed and you can expect a happily ever after for our guys. Please see the next page for a more detailed content warning.
REVIEW:
The mini mob has returned! This time around, we get Rory’s story, and I was so ready to see him meet his match. Shai sets out targeting Rory, but our Rory sees right through it and pushes right back. After Shai attempts to rob Rory, Rory turns the tables offers a solution of repayment via sex, after it immediately becomes clear that they both get a much sought after rush that ignites something in each of them.
What starts out as a simple transactional repayment plan, quickly turns into more as each encounter awakens something they were each missing in their lives. Rory quickly becomes obsessed and determines that Shai is his and while he struggles with being cared for and loved (aside from his mini mob family), he doesn’t hesitate to continue things with Shai and see how things play out.
I absolutely love this group. As expected, there is a bit of a struggle with the other relationship aspects here, especially with Cillian. Once they all get over their fear of change or that the newcomer understands the dynamics and that Rory’s relationship with them remains unchanged, Cillian begins to warm up to Shai. Tiernan and Dean take a bit more to become comfortable with another new person in their group. This is also understandable as they have kept a close circle of trust for a while now and have already adjusted to Dean and then Ollie. Shai, however, feels like a missing piece to this group puzzle and he has no trouble fitting in and standing up for himself and Rory when necessary. It helps, after a few rough patches, that he and Ollie are insistent on remaining friends.
Shai has not had an easy life. His mother is a disaster he feels responsible for, but now that he has the new family watching his back, it seems that will get easier to separate from as time goes on. He and Rory have that somewhat in common though, which helps.
I really loved these two together. Their chemistry and banter is hot, exciting and fun, and it only gets better as they both come to accept their feelings for one another. My only real niggle with this was that a good part of the story is spent describing their reluctance to accept they love each other or what that means in the scheme of things. That is interspersed with a lot of hot sex, now that Rory has determined he is all about the D. Needless to say, I wasn’t ready to say goodbye to this group and I absolutely love the darker side of Ms. Hart. I sure hope we get more of this down the road.
