BLURB:

The nightmare is over. Or so I keep telling myself. Bruised and battered, we’d narrowly escaped with our lives. I should be grateful. Grateful that my captors are in custody. Grateful that the chilling, roller-coaster of events, actually brought Nick and me closer. Grateful that we’ve finally taken a step toward something more than friendship. And I am, grateful.

But life isn’t simple.

Relationships need work.

And peace of mind is elusive in the face of unbearable guilt.

Because I’m the one who unraveled the puzzle. The one responsible for sending a young man back to a life he thought he’d escaped forever. Until I know he’s safe; until I’ve done everything I can to fix what happened, there will be no pretending I’ve done my bit. No leaving it up to the authorities. I can’t forget and move on. Not in my job. Not in my life. And certainly not in my fledgling romance with Nick Fisher who stormed into my heart with a truckload of his own issues.

The fate of a young man isn’t the only thing at stake. The quest for truth will push us to our limits. And the biggest question of all—do Nick and I have what it takes to survive the answers.

Author’s note: This story features discussion of the death of a spouse who is not a main character and references to domestic and sexual abuse. ‘The Question of Us’ is the second audiobook in a romantic suspense series following the same couple. There are no relationship cliffhangers.

REVIEW:

Nick and Mads are both very complicated people. Finding each other in the midst of Nick’s husband’s death and a threat to both of their lives has proved interesting and their stubborn determination to finish the quest the started is not lessening the danger they are in…or their feelings for each other.

The author does a really great job of portraying the struggles that both men are going through, but especially Nick. There’s so much going on in his head between his childhood trauma and the murder of his husband, and you can’t really blame him for his fears both for and about Mads.

Mads grows a lot in this story. He has a hard time understanding Nick and where his issues are coming from and it did my heart good to see him become more understanding about the trauma that Nick has been through and how it’s affected him.

Gazza is fabulous both inside and out and I think he makes an excellent 3rd to this dynamic trio. The guilt about Lee and his recapture by Marty Cline gives all three of them the motivation they need to keep going with their crazy rescue plan.

Gary Furlong goes a long way in helping to make the characters likable. He never leaves the listener guessing about who’s voice we are hearing. He helps ramp up the drama as well, bringing great anticipation to the story as he reads.

Jay and Gary are formidable in bringing this story and it’s characters to life.

I do have one complaint, abet a small one. I found some of the actions as they carried out their plan questionable as I would have thought they were smarter than their actions showed. I was really thinking “I thought they were smarter than that” as some of the things they realized too late should have been plainly obvious. But maybe it’s just me. That and the lack of empathy from some of the characters about Nick’s past trauma.

I enjoyed this story a lot, and the ending was pretty good but maybe the bad guy could have suffered more…

I can’t wait to see what’s waiting for us in book three!
