Elias
I don’t know what’s wrong with me to want something like this. To pay money for something like this. But I love it, even in my terror, even with tears streaming down my face as I race through the dark. What’s happening is my fantasy, isn’t it? Not some random person chasing me? The uncertainty adds to my panic.
But when he catches me and throws me down, when his powerful body dominates mine, I know it’s him. The one who’s been instructing me via text. The one I need.
The problem is, once won’t be enough. But this one brutal, blissful moment is all I can afford.
Andre
I’ve never gotten obsessed with someone whose fantasy I fulfilled. That’s the point. It’s a moment spent, a role played. When it’s over, it’s over. But Elias …
I can’t stop thinking about him, and not just that night. Other times. Little things. Yes, I’m stalking him.
I need to stop, but instead I find myself approaching him, again and again. He doesn’t know who I am, that I’m the one who chased him. So when I offer him a job with the kind of income that could fund another of his dark fantasies? He doesn’t realize that I’ll be fulfilling a fantasy of my own. I’ll be toying with him. Playing two roles.
It’s a bad idea, of course. Everything depends on my control, on keeping things in their own, separate boxes. I tell myself I can do it. But something about Elias—the way he needs me, the way he responds to me—turns this fantasy into a very dangerous game … for both of us.
The Chase can be read as a standalone.
*This dark MM romance has an HEA but contains potentially triggering content. A content list (which will contain spoilers) can be found in its ebook sample.
REVIEW:
Alright, Rina Saint has fast become a favourite author for me. I am addicted to her books honestly. This one was unimaginably luscious, indulgent. It starts off on hints of a fantasy, it’s atmospheric in a way of this hazy cloudy narrative building a mood and vibe so even though I’d just planned to start a bit before sleeping I ended up reading it straight through.
I love the expression of forbidden desires, of a “dark fantasy” too humiliating to be acknowledged by the protagonist, by the alpha male who is going to give him what he desires. You have to switch modes to a fantasy of being taken, this is after all primal play and flirts from CNC to Dub Con quite liberally. It is very very well written
“He’s in agony from his arousal and his fear. But he’s a masochist and I’m a sadist, so we both just stand there and experience his suffering.”
There is also this thread running through of self acceptance, of an unconditional pairing, obsessive , almost soul mates like. I loved that edge it added – finding the interlocking pieces.
Then there is the fact that aside from the grey, dark aspects of Andre’s character something we as a reader don’t know has happened something that keeps being alluded to it adds to the mystery, there is a reference to murder and violence putting is on edge. Elias is also a complex character, figuring out who he is – balance of vulnerability and bravery. His past is deliberately kept out of focus again with hints to his need for open anonymity adding to the grip the story has on the reader.
Ofcourse this book is white hot, absolute fire. The scenes are explosive!
I was phenomenally impressed by how the author flips it to reality, converges all these threads, jams in tons of action, factions at war, retribution and an unspoken negotiating of relationship dynamics as there characters push and pull into a semblance of cohesion – it is brilliant and flawless and utterly smooth.
Cannot recommend this book and this series enough.
