Description
Sable and Wynn have kept their relationship quiet. Love cupids and loss cupids are too different, after all. But cupid society wasn’t always separated. When Elder Meir hatches a plot to use Sable and Wynn to prove cupids work better together, Sable and Wynn are all in. However, the plot requires they travel to the human world to tackle a very complicated case of love and loss where failure isn’t an option. They can only hope their bond will be enough to overcome the odds.

At 7:55 a.m., the cloud bank outside Elder Meir’s office was completely deserted. Given Sable and Wynn’s nest was located on the outskirts of town in a fairly new cloud the cloud cultivators had created only a few years ago, they would have seen anyone else flying in this direction on their way in. As expected, no one else was interested in a job where love and loss had to work together.
Sable knocked on the office door, which popped open a moment later. Elder Meir saw them, then realized it was only them, and he let out a sad smile.
“I expected you two, but I had hoped… Well, there’s still a few more minutes before eight. Maybe someone else will want to jump into the unknown. In the meantime, please come in. Have you had breakfast yet?”
Elder Meir’s wings were almost entirely red, the jeweled tone shining like rubies under the lights of his office as he settled into the chair behind his desk. An orderly hurried forward to pour them all tea.
“We ate before we came,” Sable replied. He took the offered teacup, but the heat of the steam wafting from the cup prevented him from taking a sip.
Elder Meir waited the full remaining five minutes, looking hopefully at the office door, open to the cloudbank outside. When the clock on his desk began to chime the hour, he sighed and waved for the orderly to shut the door.
“You already know the mission, so unless you have questions I won’t repeat it,” Elder Meir began. He paused in case they did have questions, but when neither Sable nor Wynn spoke, he continued. “However, what I outlined last night was only the overt mission. What this morning has proven to me more than ever is that the covert part of this mission is of incredible importance. Even more important than helping our subjects.”
“Covert mission?” Sable asked, trying to keep his tone from going sharp. The tea was finally cool enough to drink, so he took a sip to prevent himself from saying something rude.
Elder Meir chuckled. “Don’t worry. Nothing dangerous. What I and the rest of the elders want is to dispel the terrible belief that the love cupids and the loss cupids are enemies. When I was as young as you two, everyone worked in pairs. One to help end lost love, and another to help them find new love instead. Then we had the series of tragedies.” His smile faded, but he didn’t look sad, only determined. “Elder Kess passed suddenly, and the cupid who took his place was entirely unqualified and entirely unsuited. Very rarely are cupids born with darkness in their hearts. Mischief, yes, but hate is not an emotion we usually have the ability to harbor. Elder Ortho was the exception. He wanted power, to be a king like the humans had on Earth. Only thanks to the intervention of some goblins were we able to remove him, and I shudder to think what happened to him in the end. The goblins promised not to give the details.
