BLURB:

A Christmas novella for those who love a little action with their holiday cheer…

His cabin was the last place I wanted to go.

Detective Rafferty put me behind bars, and I should hate him for it.
I mean…I do.
Mostly.
But there’s a fine line between grudge and obsession, and I’ve been walking it for the last year.
Now my protection detail’s blown on Christmas Eve, and the only man who can keep me alive is the one who ruined my life.

Texas Snow is a 29k word enemies-to-lovers story set in the Highland Lakes area of Central Texas during a freak Christmas snowstorm. Originally published in the Snowed In anthology, this expanded novella is for those who love a little action with their holiday cheer.

REVIEW:

Rafferty has been working for a long time on a case against the Travis family.  When there is a murder to solve, he works very hard to find the killer and build the case against Jesse Travis, the very attractive son of the head of the family.  Rafferty has been watching him a long time.  He seems him help a homeless man, take food to an elderly woman, play with the neighborhood kids.  He doesn’t seem to be a stone cold killer.  But he’s possibly a lynchpin to taking the whole enterprise down.  Except he doesn’t take the deal.  Instead he goes to trial – and loses.  And it’s off to jail for him – after recovering from the intense punch and punctured lung and broken ribs when Jesse goes for Rafferty in the courtroom.

Rafferty then has a rough year.  His marriage ends.  His grandparents who raised him died.  He’s been working in a gang unit where there is very little success.  So as Christmas looms, he’s going to take some time away at his grandparents, now his, cabin by a lake.  He’s anxious to get there and make some decisions about his life.  So he heads out with a bottle of vodka, some food and a duffle.

During the last year, Jesse has had to work hard to stay alive.  It’s clear that someone has a hit out on him based on the number of near misses he’s had and the number of attempts on his life that have been made.  He’s been moved, but that never stops things for long.  Then his lawyer shows up and says there is a new deal on the table.  Since his family has abandoned him and he only is in touch with one cousin, he agrees to turn state’s witness and go into WITSEC if that cousin is left out of things.  He should be out by Christmas and held in protective custody until the trial and then off to a new life.

Of course the transfer doesn’t go as planned, and Jesse ends up running for his life.  The one place he knows that he will be safe is crazy.  Because it’s with the guy who actually put him in jail.  But he’s right.  When he finds Rafferty in the cabin he’s staying in, he has found at least a temporary refuge.  Refuge with the guy he’s been fantasizing about for a year.  And not just about killing him – well that too 😉  And there is a major snowstorm, no cell service, no wifi and nowhere to go for the foreseeable future.  What they have is vodka, food, and one bed 😛

Oh man!  This is a crazy ride!  I just knew these two wouldn’t be finished after Jesse went to jail.  No matter when he got out, there was unfinished business here.  Jesse never wanted to the life he was forced into and Rafferty intuited that while he was following him.  He actually respected Jesse’s toughness and also making the right decision after being held in jail for a year.  Jesse didn’t want his family to get away with what they were doing and didn’t lose sleep over taking them down.  His cousin ended up being the solution to a lot of problems 😉  And Rafferty turned out to be a good guy that realizes sometimes you have to do things a way that isn’t strictly legal 😉  These two are super hot together, but there is also sweetness in their relationship and Rafferty’s protective streak is a huge turn on for Jesse.  He truly ends up being Jesse’s safe place.  It’s definitely an unexpected Christmas holiday gift for both of them 😀  Recommended.
