Following a painful breakup, Rafe is looking forward to a fresh start in Boston, and he’s thrilled when he immediately clicks with his new D-partner, Mickey Krause.

Mickey’s smart, talented, and loves telling Rafe what to do. It feels good to have some structure and, finally, Rafe’s life is coming together on and off the ice.

As their friendship deepens, Rafe slowly realizes he’s falling for Mickey. Too bad he’s been down this road before. He knows exactly how badly it could end.

Roles are defined and tension smolders, but neither of them can stop their out-of-control feelings.

An independent perfectionist, Mickey’s had a rough season so far and he’s immediately smitten with Rafe’s sweet, earnest vibes.

Finally having someone who works well with him in the bedroom and beside him in a game has him hitting all his goals.

But when Mickey’s world is turned upside down following an altercation with Rafe’s ex, he’ll have to learn to let go and let someone else lead for once.

REVIEW:

Note:  This is book 3 in this series and has spoilers for the first two books.  There are also spoilers for previous series here, but it doesn’t take away from this story.  Technically it can be read as a standalone, but I recommend the other books in this series too 😉

I really am enjoying this series!  This time, we have a new player, Rafael Moon, who is traded to Boston.  He’s paired with Mickey Krause, aka Mouse, who is a German guy and is pretty quiet – hence the nickname.  Rafael needed to leave his team in Minnesota after a bad break up with a teammate was seriously affecting his game.  His trip to Boston was a bit nightmarish and he is exhausted.  Mickey offers to drive him to practice since he’s staying in a hotel and he agrees.  It’s also New Year’s and they end up at an Irish bar with the team and most of the O’Sheas.  Mickey is very attracted to his new teammate but Rafael has been burned and he vows that he’s not going to date a teammate again after what happened in Minnesota.  This dashes Mickey’s hopes but doesn’t exactly dampen his crush.

As Rafael gets integrated into the team, he is really grateful to Mickey for helping him – with rides, with insights, and with elevating his play and showing him the ropes with the new teammates.  Mickey includes Rafe in things and invites him over to the apartment he shares with Tanner, another teammate.  Tanner is a bit of a wild child.  He’s pan and he is not into relationships at the moment, but has many many hookups.  Some of them pretty loud 😉  He also kind of lives like a frat bro – doesn’t clean up after himself, spends money a bit recklessly, etc.  But he’s got a good heart.

Rafe is getting tired of living in the hotel and the apartment that Tanner and Mickey share is a three-bedroom.  They invite Rafe to just move in when it seems he’s not have lucky finding a place and asks if maybe there are any apartments available in their complex.  This of course will make things more difficult for Mickey and his crush.

Then Rafe gets sick and Mickey takes care of him.  It seems like in many ways he’s been doing this since Rafe arrived.  Rafe has shared that he is demi which he figured out later in life.  It was like finding the missing puzzle piece for him and why the breakup with Logan in Minnesota was so hard.  Logan was his person and that took a while to develop so when Logan dumped him, it was very hard to figure out what to do.  He lost his best friend and his boyfriend which was devastating.  Mickey understand but it doesn’t mean that he can help his feelings.  The closer they get though as Mickey takes care of Rafe, the harder it gets to keep his feelings in check.  Then when things are reversed, well Rafe realizes that things have changed for him too.

There is a turning point after a pivotal game against Rafe’s former team.  Things get very physical and Mickey gets injured.  Rafe feels terrible, especially since it keeps Mickey off the ice for a while.  There are some twists and turns in Mickey’s recovery, but Rafe is there every step of the way, reciprocating all the care the Mickey has taken with him.  Oh and of course everyone has figured out that Rafe and Mickey are together 😉  The team rallies around them though 🙂

This story was so engaging from the get-go.   I felt so bad for Rafe and how Logan treated him.  He really needed for someone to have his back and Mickey was the best: a good friend; a good teammate; then a great boyfriend.  I loved seeing all the O’Sheas and especially their mom 🙂  Connor and Jesse and Gavin and Dakota are there providing support as well in their respective roles.  Tanner was great comic relief.  Does he have ADHD??  His antics as a young guy in the league seemed pretty on point 😉  Hopefully he’ll mature as the series goes on.  Rafe is such a good guy and so is Mickey.  Their connection of friendship and then love was believable.  I appreciated the closure for Rafe and was happy to see him with a guy who appreciates him and knows that communication is key.  I am looking forward to the next book in this series and more stories in this hockey world 🙂  Highly recommended.
