Description

A gangster’s life is hard. As the youngest son of a Chicago mobster lord, Fionn O’Grady is no stranger to crime, even though he’s clean and renowned for kissing rather than fighting. It’s a lonely life for a pizza-loving redhead. All he’s ever wanted is an easy-going boyfriend who doesn’t take life too seriously. It’s too bad that no man will date him because of his family.

Trouble comes when a UK undercover cop infiltrates the O’Grady mansion. According to the family, it’s up to Fionn to gain revenge by kidnapping the cop’s kid brother. Kidnap? Fionn couldn’t hurt anyone, certainly not a handsome young man needing a caring boyfriend.

As the chaotic brother of an undercover cop, Oli Green is endlessly fascinated by gangsters, particularly pizza-loving redheads. At twenty, Oli’s no kid—he fantasises about being kidnapped by a gentle gangster to guide him through his first time. Bonus points for emo villains! Above all, Oli wants an easy-going boyfriend who doesn’t take life too seriously…

Fionn and Oli fall together as the gangster lord tightens his net around them. Is Fionn strong enough to decide what matters most—family honour or the tug of his heart?

Gangsters live hard, but they love even harder.

Oli’s nerves just about held. He told himself he and Fionn were only talking about bikes, nothing more. Fionn was a paying customer; Oli was good with those. He ignored the tightness in his shorts. It wasn’t professional. What if Charlie heard he’d been flirting with the customers, half-naked, offering hugs? She’d probably throw a wobbly. You have to take responsibility, Oli. Blah, blah. Oli didn’t want to be adult and mature. He wanted to be kissed by the gentle fella with eyes like green forests and gentle hands that caught him around the waist as he tripped over his feet, gah.

Yeah, the morning had been unexpectedly thrilling despite getting up late and accidentally driving into the neighbour’s gate. Oli locked up Bikes and Bits with the world’s hottest man at his side, expecting something to go wrong at any moment. Because it wasn’t every day a tall redhead with an unusual accent entered the shop wearing a Wonder Woman top. Oli had never believed in coincidences—everything happened for a reason. Over the last few years, each of his friends had found partners, but he had nobody to share his bed with. Maybe it was finally his turn to fall head over bike cleats.

A gentle breeze laced with summer fragrances blown in from the nearby woods eased another hot day. Oli sniffed the air and spoke without thinking. “It’s a great day. Pity we can’t go into the woods on mountain bikes. I could show you the river and the slopes.”

Rather than smiling politely as Oli expected, Fionn’s handsome face went from cautious to positively gleeful. “Could we? I’d love it.” He slung an arm around Oli’s shoulders and hugged him.

It was enough to make a bike shop owner pass out with anticipation. Even after three months of dating Alex, Oli hadn’t felt so rushy and hot. Alex never touched him in public, and when Oli tried to take his hand, Alex pulled away abruptly.

Oli pointed out the various cafés and restaurants, hoping Fionn would choose the burger place at the corner rather than the many vegan options. Alex had glared at Oli every time he ate anything unhealthy.

“So, er, what do you like to eat?” Oli hung back nervously in case he spoiled his chances with Fionn before they started, deciding he’d eat spinach burgers if it’d get him a date, yuk.

Fionn looked from one place to another, shadowing his olive eyes against the bright sunshine as he peered intently at the menus. “Well now, let’s see.”

Oli wondered what it might be like if Fionn looked at him with the same intensity. He shuddered despite the sun.

Outside the burger place, Fionn stopped dead. He turned to Oli. “Don’t suppose you eat burgers, do you?” He smiled a bit, while Oli grew hotter than Mars in a heatwave.

Oli surreptitiously covered his shorts with his shoulder bag. “Yeah. Why wouldn’t I?” Christ. What was it about Fionn that went straight to Oli’s heart, not to mention his dick? Of course, the redhead was handsome, but there was something more—perhaps how he waited for Oli rather than answering for him and how he listened carefully to every word Oli uttered, even the daft ones. Fionn was an observer.

Oli breathed deeply, finding it increasingly difficult not to make an absolute twat of himself, the only thing stopping him an image of his sister’s face, glaring, hands on hips.

After scrutinising the menu, Fionn led Oli inside the burger bar. “I didn’t know whether you’d be into only healthy.”

Oli couldn’t contain his disgust. “God, no. I can’t remember when I last ate a vegetable. Room for a little one?” He squeezed onto the same bench as Fionn instead of taking the one opposite as any normal person would. He didn’t seem able to help himself.

Fionn showed no signs of caring about the lack of space between them. He nudged Oli’s head gently with his own, allowing his red locks to mingle with Oli’s darker curls. “No vegetables? Well then, sorry, you can’t have a burger.”

Here it comes. Oli expected to hear a load of crap about vitamins. “Why not?”

Fionn must’ve seen his disappointment because he breathed a sexy laugh and gripped Oli’s hand briefly. “Because of the pickle. Pickles are vegetables, aren’t they? And they come with hamburgers?”

During an enjoyable discussion about pickles, Oli fell hard into the idea of dating Fionn, moving swiftly from a customer-shop relationship into a sexual one where Fionn could do whatever he wanted. He’d overheard a friend saying a week was sufficient to get to know a man well enough to take him to bed. At the time, Oli had been horrified; now, such an idea was too hot to handle.

To Oli’s relief, Fionn bit into his burger with vigour, taking no care of social niceties. Oli didn’t eat politely either. Actually, he wolfed down the food without taking a breath. He hadn’t had time for breakfast and could easily have eaten two burgers and a bucket of fries.

Throughout the meal, they shared short descriptions of the food, which Oli thought were about as perfect as any conversation and satisfied him emotionally way more than anything Alex had ever said.

Fionn devolved into, “Good. Spicy. More. Must have more.”

While Oli lost all words and merely nodded with the occasional grunt: “Mm. Mmm.”

The enthusiastic, vigorous meal broke through typical social barriers. When they both sat back, wiping their mouths and cheeks, Oli felt he knew Fionn well enough to ask him for more information about what he wanted in biking. He hoped an invitation to bed would come only hours later.

He turned to the handsome guy pushing red hair from his eyes. “What kind of trail do you want? I’m free now if you are. I mean, I’m always free for you. God, I should shut up.” How he wished he could touch Fionn’s hair, rub it between his fingers to test whether it was as hot as it looked, maybe even tug it to see what Fionn would do.

Fionn spoke quickly. “A trail where I can kidnap you. I’m a gangster, you see.” He laughed loudly, his eyes crinkling at the sides, drawing Oli in instead of shutting him out as Alex used to.

It was such a silly thing to have said. Oli assumed Fionn must have been under great stress. Charlie behaved similarly after a long case, forgetting her social cues and speaking like a kid. This made Oli fancy Fionn even more. Any man who could say a thing like that wouldn’t care about Oli’s many failings. And it would be fun to mess around, pretending like he used to as a kid with Charlie.

He considered what it might be like to be kidnapped by a redhead with a lopsided grin and long fingers, then tied to a tree, undressed slowly, and revealed to the elements.

The blush started from his feet, moved up through his body and enveloped him with a heat he hadn’t experienced since before Alex. “Funny,” Oli said. “You know—I’ve always had this thing about gangsters, maybe because my sister’s a cop. I always kind of crush on the bad boys on the telly.” He laughed. “I do need to shut up, don’t I,” he said, embarrassed enough to want to crawl under the table.

Something crossed Fionn’s face that Oli couldn’t identify or name. It passed and left a softness Oli longed to explore.

After a while, Fionn placed his larger hand on top of Oli’s and left it there. “I reckon real gangsters aren’t so great. But no, you definitely shouldn’t shut up, not ever. I could listen to you all day. I don’t believe I’d ever grow tired of you, Oli Green.” He laughed silently when Oli’s mouth refused to close because of his apparent shock.

They were close enough that it wasn’t difficult for Fionn to reach out, lift a chunk of Oli’s hair, and lightly kiss his cheek. Later, Oli would wonder if it had happened or if it had been only wishing. The kiss rendered him absolutely helpless, and he lost all power of speech.

Eule Grey has settled, for now, in the north UK. She’s worked in education, justice, youth work, and even tried her hand at butter-spreading in a sandwich factory. Sadly, she wasn’t much good at any of them!

She writes novels, novellas, poetry, and a messy combination of all three. Nothing about Eule is tidy but she rocks a boogie on a Saturday night!

For now, Eule is she/her or they/them. Eule has not yet arrived at a pronoun that feels right.
