BLURB:
Braiden Beadle’s craft shop is on its last legs, even though it’s filled with the plushest yarns and the finest fabrics. Nobody cares for crafts anymore, not since the dungeon appeared outside Weathervale. Adventurers have swarmed the seaside city, eager to discover the dungeon’s treasures… and not a single one of them needs any knitting needles.
Desperate to save his shop, Braiden prepares to brave the mysterious dungeon for its riches. But Augustin Arcosa, the Wizard of Weathervale, has deemed the dungeon a threat to his hometown. He wants to seal it away forever.
Armed with only his wits and his impractical magic of weaving, Braiden must convince the haughty and annoyingly handsome wizard that the dungeon poses no danger to Weathervale. And there’s only one way to be certain: they must explore its depths together.
Can an unlikely adventurer and a windbag wizard find common ground underground? Join Braiden, Augustin, and an evolving party of quirky colleagues as they embark on the cozy quest of a lifetime. A humorous, heartwarming fantasy adventure perfect for fans of Legends & Lattes, Howl’s Moving Castle, and Terry Pratchett.
REVIEW:
Braiden Beadle’s business is not going well. He’s behind on his rent and the new thing in town is the dungeon that has opened up his town of Weathervale. Needless to say, crafting is not something that adventurers are willing to spend time and money on as they ready themselves to explore and exploit the dungeon. Braiden is out of ideas, so he is determined to find something in the dungeon that will answer his financial woes.
But then the Wizard of Weathervale, Augustin Arcosa shows up determined to seal off the dungeon. He’s sure there is danger there and that something bad will come up out of the dungeon and endanger Weathervale. The adventurers do not agree and neither does Braiden. Nor does Augustin’s grandmother who is the head of the council of Weathervale. She coerces Braiden to follow Augustin and make sure he doesn’t close off the dungeon which is now leading to revenue growth in Weathervale. Given Braiden’s precarious financial situation, he doesn’t exactly have a choice in the matter.
Braiden and Augustin have gotten off on the wrong foot, but they do head to the dungeon together. They are joined by the Elf Allessandra who turns out to be an interesting ally. Then they find more unexpected creatures and allies as they go deeper into the dungeon. Each of them have magic and powers that help them circumvent the dangers they encounter. Braiden and Augustin are also dancing around an attraction that neither has expected. Braiden doesn’t think he has much to offer his friends in the way of skills in fighting, but it turns out that his magic is more helpful than he knows. And he owes it all to his grandmother who taught him 😉
When push comes to shove, there turn out to be more interested parties who want to ensure that the dangers of the dungeon don’t destroy Weathervale. And the powers of the various creatures who inhabit this world are all have something to offer and skills to share that will aid in their fight against the powerful magic hidden deep in the dungeon. And maybe Augustin and Braiden can relax a little and enjoy their hard earned victory. Although they can’t get too comfortable 😉
I so enjoyed this story! Braiden is a delight. Augustin is a lot of bluster at first, but he turns out to be a decent guy. Even his somewhat conniving grandmother has hidden depths. The unexpected world below the surface and the strange and beguiling creatures with other talents and surprises were delightful. Lot of the characters were not who they seemed to be and the reveals were fun. There are funny and serious moments here and real team building. Also I loved that all the grandmothers were clearly the best!
Jon Vertullo is a new to me narrator and I LOVED his performance here. There are so many fun voices and accents and just a perfect blend of character tones that I thoroughly enjoyed every single minute. I can’t wait for the next book in this series. What a treat! Highly recommended.
