Oh, Dani, how I’ve missed you. Thank you for letting me do a post here.
I was given several prompts to choose from for this post, and I’ve decided to pick none of them. Big surprise, I’m doing my own thing.
So… I’ve decided to share a little more than I usually do.
My routine is that I get up, put my socks on, pat the dog, have a sip of water and put on my glasses. I can somewhat focus at this point. I put the dogs outside, pour myself a cup of coffee and sit down in my recliner, and turn on the news. I am, after all, a news junkie, which most people who know me, know I am.
After about 8 minutes, I let the dogs in, give them their morning cookies and sip my coffee, and try to become human. If I don’t have coffee first thing in the morning, I am one grumpy old man.
After my first cup of coffee and many dog pats, I check my personal email. No, I do not check my work email until I am at work. It is all very mundane and boring. I may play some solitaire on my tablet if the news is dull. I will say this, the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation), has the best weatherman I’ve ever seen, Nate Burns. AND he is openly gay and cute as a button. I think someone has made him start wearing tight briefs-type underwear. He used to wear boxer briefs and… well… he was generously blessed, is all I’m saying. I do miss seeing… well, moving on.
Once I have finished my second cup of coffee, which is around seven a.m., I go downstairs to my new office. Oh, can you guess what colour one of the walls is? Not quite Tennessee Orange, but metallic copper, which does have a whole lot of orange tones. That’s good, because that is where most of my very Tennessee orange is. Yup, you can’t take the Volunteer outta this boy. I even have a little Tennessee-themed Christmas tree.
Through the sliding glass door, I can see the lake. There are so many birds to watch as they swoop around, diving in or landing close to the water. My favourite bird here is the kookaburra. I love their laughing singing. If you’ve never heard one, you have to go find it. Hell, they even have a song written about them. Sooo cute. And then there are the wallabies hopping around early in the day and in the afternoons.
Then it’s down to business. Do the email thing. I give myself ten minutes to do social media. It can be such a time suck. I even have an alarm setting on my phone to tell me to give it up and get to work.
The writing. The process is almost the same each and every day. I read the past two chapters that I’d written the day before, or days. That puts the voices in my head. I start to feel what they are feeling, what they want, and what they are going to do next. I rarely have any control over them. They are going to do what they want to do, and I let them for the most part.
Now, if it is a new book, it takes a little longer to get going, and there are times when I will rewrite the first chapter several times until I feel it’s right. That doesn’t mean it won’t be changed or rewritten several more times. The hardest part of getting a new book started is that first chapter, or at least it is for me.
Twelve noon is quitting time. I have lunch, play with the dogs, put them out again and vegetate until one in the afternoon. If it’s spring, as it is right now, I’ll go out and dig in the dirt or start the mowing process. There are three acres that need mowing, so I do a lot of that.
And this… is where I’ve become a huge audiobook fan. It makes mowing much more enjoyable. Today I am going to mow, and I’m looking forward to it because I was left on a cliffhanger yesterday on the book I’m currently listening to. And in case you haven’t guessed, my big tractor is… orange!
Think of Steel Magnolias and Julia Roberts. “It is my signature colour!”
