BLURB:

Flynn Knight is the only (and frankly, impossible) child of the leader of the vampires in Los Angeles. He’s also a bit of a scatterbrain, a thirty-something manchild, and a private investigator. When one of his mother’s political frenemies gets killed and she asks him to investigate, he’s put between a rock—her—and a hard place—the fact that not a single vampire in the city will believe the answers he finds without impressive proof to back him up.

Combine that with an eighty-thousand-dollar bill he has no idea how he’s going to pay, a hit and run that has landed him a victim of the cat distribution system, and his mother trying to foist a new business partner off on him, and his life is way more complicated than he likes.

At least his new partner is nice to look at, even if he’s the weirdest vampire ever, who doesn’t seem to follow any of the usual vampire rules.

Also, why won’t this kitten stop eating?

Smokescreen is set in the Fantastic Fluke universe, starring never before seen characters and a new setting. It begins to explore Flynn Knight’s relationships, and while it contains a complete story, it does not reach the slow burn romance plot, and the main overarching plot will continue in book two, Façade.

REVIEW:

There is so much to love about this book.

First, I love the characters. I mean Flynn is awesome and pretty hilarious. I love how he grows during the book, both personally and professionally. He’s one of those guys that stuff just happens too and he figure out how to roll with it. Guess that’s what happens when you have a vampire for a mother.

And speaking of his mother, she’s absolutely wonderful. Very silver screen, old Hollywood actress with a bit of serial killer thrown in.

Then there’s the new business partner his mom sets him up with. Davin is Irish and gorgeous and a strange kind of vampire himself. And then there’s the gorgeous detective who actually seems to care about Flynn and keeping him safe. Not sure how that going to play out in the second book but I wouldn’t say no to a thruple if I’m being honest.

And I have to shout out to Plot Twist. She’s a perfect kitty…maybe. I spent a lot of time giggling at her.

This story is engaging, smart and once it got a hold of me, I couldn’t stop listening until it was done.

Of course, I think narrator Greg Tremblay had a lot to do with that.

He was the perfect choice to narrate this book. He makes you believe in every single character. His smooth voice helps draw you in and then the story itself grabs you and won’t let you go. It’s a good thing my day job is flexible because I couldn’t stop at all.

I have read a few others in the series this broke off of and I have read a ton of stuff by Sam Burns in general and its always pretty damn good, but this one goes above and beyond. I can’t think of a single complaint other than I hate having to wait for the second book. I’m just too damn impatient and greedy.

A full five hearts because nothing less will do.
