Maseo seeks revenge against his evil father who almost cost him his life. Can he get the ultimate retribution by joining forces with two of his father’s greatest enemies?
Banished from his wolf pack, Maseo is rescued by two unlikely allies. They have every reason to hate him, but instead of leaving him to die, King Kitsuki and Auslin offer Maseo a second chance on life and the promise of vengeance.
Maseo finds a new reason to live as he fights at their side in their brutal war against his tyrant father. He’s envious of Kitsuki and Auslin’s mating bond, making him wish he could be more than just a soldier for their cause.
As the battles rage and new dangers arise, Maseo’s struggle with his heart becomes as perilous as the battlefield itself when the lines between loyalty, love, and lust blur for the three men.
Will Maseo sacrifice his chance at a future with Kitsuki and Auslin for the greater good, or risk everything for a love he never believed was possible?
Lord of the Lone Wolf is the third book of the Bonded Hearts series and part of the Talwyn Saga universe. Please do not read this until you’ve finished Mage of the Dragon Prince and Consort of the Dragon King first, as this series must be read in order to fully understand it. Full of dramatic twists and turns, this book will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last page. The story concludes with a happily ever after in Fury of the Fated Mates.
REVIEW:
I have waited eagerly for this next chapter in King Kitsuki and Auslin’s journey. And I savored each and every page!
Auslin and King Kitsuki are frantically trying to find Maseo before he dies of his life-ending injuries that his father inflicted upon him. Both men realize that he is very important to each of them separately, as well as them together, but are fearful to state it aloud. Kitsuki remembers well how his father’s philandering brought so much hurt to his family. And Auslin finally has his beloved mate and can’t understand the huge draw to another. When Auslin saves Maseo, literally with minutes to spare, the two men know that Maseo must come home with them. And that he needs to learn that his father and former lovers were evil and horrible to him. That he deserves so much more! He deserves to be honored and praised for his abilities. And, even more, he deserves to experience true love and devotion instead of the misery he has endured at the hands of those that should have valued and loved him.
This book took me through the wringer literally. I had to walk away several times because my heart hurt so much. The evil in this well written universe became almost too much at times. But seeing good stomp all over evil was the reward I very much needed. But poor Maseo was literally the punching bag that kept getting hit time after time. There were times when I wanted to throw my phone (yes I read all my books on an iPhone 😳) across the room and say “Enough is Enough”. But that wasn’t how this book had to go. Each and every scene was vital to this ongoing epic saga. The Trinity Bond needs to be forged correctly and completely. Kitsuki, Auslin and Maseo have endured such trials and torture that they need their Happily Ever After to be so solid that nothing in any of the three realms can ever undo it!
Be prepared for the most epic and unbelievably real battle scenes that can be imagined. Each and every minute I was deeply entrenched in the mission to finally rid the world of the evilness that Nasume’s thirst for power and dominance brought forth. His reign of terror had to be stopped! And who better to join forces than the son he continuously shamed, tortured and discarded and the man he tormented for centuries with his undesired advances. I though for sure it would be Kizoshi that would get the honor in ending him. But that wasn’t right. And what finally happened was true poetic justice! But, in true Nasume style, he seems, yet again, to get the last revenge.
Nasume had stooped to the lowest of lows bringing Maseo’s mother Corina back from the Beyond Realm to take out her only child that she loved so much. “Unfortunately, your father is a vicious man,” she said, the blue flames dimming with sadness. “He had Ishibiya summon me to kill you. But neither of them understands that a mother who loves her son could never raise a hand to hurt him.” And Ishibiya calling on Tatsuki to take out his own children and countrymen. “Ishibiya has been siphoning dead souls from the Beyond Realm to build Nasume a formidable army of lichen skeletons,” Tatsuki explained. “While we are powerful enough to resist, we answered the call of the death puppeteer because we have a role to play in this war.” Might be one of my most favorite parts of this amazing book. The tenderness and loyalty of the parents and their children, reunited for those moments in the midst of horror and terror, was touching and heartbreaking. Hearing Tatsuki speak of his hindsight was especially touching. But both Nasume and Ishibiya were stupid to think that they could use parent’s against their children in such heinous way. But I absolutely loved that the author placed this in there for a moment of rest from the war, for both her men and the readers, and to show the compassion she has for her men during their most trying and difficult times. She is a master at that.
I need to caution you on a couple things. First and foremost, these books have to be read in order. I suggest that order is:
- Enchanter of Dragons: this prequel is where we meet Uncle/General Jaega and his mate, Fersen – the last surviving Unicorn shifter
- Mage of the Dragon Prince: where Auslin (Vanra) and Kitsuki (Kitaro) originally meet and discover they are fated Mates
- Consort of the Dragon King: 600 years later we finally have Auslin and his now King reunited.
- Lord of the Lone Wolf: our current reading
Each of these books picks up directly where we last ended. And they are all needed to understand this epic saga we are along for the ride on. Also, each book has a bonus chapter that is important. You can find these at the end of each story. This book’s bonus was a doozy I never saw coming and I want, no need, more!
Next thing I caution is to take the time to read and savor this story. There are so many Easter Eggs hidden in this story that I believe they are tidbits to tease us and keep us readers invested and speculating. I have my own thoughts and can’t wait to see if they play out as I believe (and hope) they do.
I can’t recommend this series and book strongly enough. Even though we are left on the cliffhanger of all cliffhangers I know that the extremely talented author Zarina Aston (also know as Ariella Zoelle) will finally bring this part of the Talwyn Saga universe to a much needed conclusion in her next book in the series, Slayer of the Shadow Tyrant. But I am also convinced that this will not be that last we see of these amazing and heroic men and the found family that surrounds them.
