BLURB:
One grumpy gargoyle. One hopeful vampire. One chaotic witch. Three fated mates face a looming threat.
Pavel has been called cranky, aloof, and an exacting musical genius, but what should people expect? He’s three thousand years old. He’ll soon be entering the final stage of a gargoyle’s life span, transforming into a statue and going dormant forever.
So why would the universe throw his mates at him now, when he has so little time left? He desperately wants to protect them, to guide them, but he’s terrified he’ll be a burden as he descends into oblivion.
Justin is working hard to overcome his anxiety and stay positive as he rebuilds after a disastrous few years. When he discovers his two fated mates at his new opera job, he rejects them out of hand. Sure, giving up control to these two men would fulfill every one of his fantasies, but love already screwed up his life once.
Sebastian is a witch with a rare affinity—chaos—and that quality follows him wherever he goes. His opera career is taking off, and finding his mates is just the cherry on the sundae! Even if they may not be ready for the power of his seductive, mischievous personality.
The three soon find that ignoring their connection is impossible, especially when they have to see each other every day. And they can’t escape each other when they’re trapped together in the opera house elevator.
But whatever headway they’ve made is arrested by the return of Sebastian’s power-hungry sister. Can the three fated mates accept their bond in time to survive her attack and save their new family?
The Maestro’s Mates is a 65,000-word poly (MMM), fated mates, vampire/gargoyle/witch romance with a guaranteed HEA and no cliffhanger. It contains a grumpy gargoyle, a chaotic witch, and the hopeful but self-doubting vampire that falls for them. It also has steamy scenes and the violence you might expect from a vampire story. It is a standalone novel in an interconnected series. Not suitable for readers under 18.
REVIEW:
I am always looking for a new interesting paranormal to sink my teeth into, and this being the first gargoyle character I’ve seen, it lured me right in. This is book 3 of a series, but as it mentioned being a stand-alone story, I wasn’t too concerned about starting here. That said, there is probably a good bit of back story to this world that can be learned in the previous books which would have made this feel a bit deeper, but overall, I didn’t have any trouble picking things up.
In this world, we have witches, vampires and gargoyles who don’t generally intermingle but know they others exist. Pavel, the thousands year old gargoyle, is the Maestro of an opera house. Justin is the young vampire who clearly has more of a back story, but for this book’s purposes, is starting his life anew with a job at the opera house. This is obviously where he meets Pavel, and in turn, Sebastian, the witch who is one of the opera singers. Pretty quickly, Sebastian realizes he has been gifted with these two guys as mates, but convincing them of the same proves to be a bit of a challenge for various reasons.
Much of the story is Sebastian trying to get his mates on board. Justin is fairly quick, but Pavel is a bit tougher, which is where things get more interesting and where I was totally drawn in. It all relates to his gargoyle issues of growing old and aging to the point that he will eventually end up as a total statue. Not wanting to saddle his mates with that fate, he fights off their attempts at every turn.
The other main aspect of this story involves Sebastian’s family. His mother is the head of the witches circle but they are facing a takeover from Sebastian’s sister. They make an alliance with the vampires to help fight this off.
There were a lot of aspects that I really loved about this story, the characters and their world. There were times when I really wished it was a bit more fleshed out or felt a bit deeper, but again, I think some of that could be attributed to not having read the previous stories. I loved the details about each character and their traits and how they all were able to blend together. Things moved along at a fairly steady pace until the last 90% when things really got exciting. I now want to go back and read the other stories and I really want to find some more about gargoyles!
