BLURB:

Mason Montgomery has had enough of his own self-pity and the never-ending traffic of the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.

After selling up and moving to Savannah, sinking most of his money into a condemned Victorian home in a down and out part of town, an accident leaves him with a secret no doctor would ever be able to explain.

He can see ghosts. And one ghost in particular—Francis, an enigmatic presence lingering in Savannah’s sultry nights—feels more real than anyone Mason has ever known. But as their love deepens, Mason must confront a heartbreaking truth: how can he hold onto someone who no longer belongs to this world?

A sweeping romance of fate, desire, and the undeniable pull between past and present, this unforgettable tale asks: What if the greatest love of your life wasn’t alive at all?

REVIEW:

Can a story be bittersweet when one of the MC’s is already dead and is a Ghost?

Mason Montgomery hasn’t had a good string of luck lately. His dear Uncle Bud’s passing had definitely taken a role on him. And the passing of his good friend Tim to AIDS was hard too. Then add in being dumped by his boyfriend Ross for a younger gym rat was part of the final reason to get the heck out of Atlanta. With the Olympics coming and the town bursting at the seams, he got more money than he expected from the sale of his home he remodeled with care. That money, and his nest egg from Uncle Bud, gave him the push to move to Savanna. The classic century plus old home needs lots of TLC but, with his buddies Mitch and Paul, will become a masterpiece. When a freak ladder accident leaves Mason head bump that changes his life forever. Something in that jarring of his brain gave him “the gift” to see ghosts have not passed through. And the gorgeous man that is also occupying his new home is a keeper! But can a living man and a murdered ghost have a “life” together when they can’t even touch?

I can say with complete certainty that this story is not like anything I have ever read before. Being in love with a ghost, who was murdered by his own mother close to a century ago, was pushing boundaries of my neatly wrapped reading box. Then add in that it is set almost 30 years ago and that is definitely not me! Then add that fateful word Bittersweet and I would have said no way is this book for me. But, somehow, Author Max Vos worked his voodoo magic on me and I could barely set this amazing book down. All the characters were extremely well constructed and were real…even though several weren’t even alive! Just Wow!

I really want what to know happens next in Mason’s life without his Francis. I’m going to have a hard time ever letting go of dear Francis though. That poor, sweet man had such a sad life, which was so unfair because he was such a good, kind, brilliant and caring gentleman. The only shining thing about that was his last few months of his unlife. Francis meeting Mason and falling in true love was what made it all bearable for me. They were so perfect for each other besides the whole “he’s dead” part. But I want to see Mason happy because that was the whole reason Francis had to leave. And I’m worried how he will be once Cousin Ellen is no longer here. But he has the rest of his found family. Mitch, Paul and his family are now as much his family as Ellen, Gerald and Sharon plus Nick and Patty have become. And I want to see how the future shapes up.
