When I’m tossed into the trunk of a car, I realize that what little luck I have has finally run out—especially when I find that Tony, the man who’d abducted me, is planning on using me to get back at my father. My chances for escape look pretty bleak when I’m handcuffed to Tony’s bodyguard, an intimidating man named Shepherd who apparently loves tight shirts and seems to be amused by making my life miserable. Soon, though, I learn that Shepherd has a heart and a brain. And sometimes, those two things can be a bigger weapon than anything in a time like this. I just have to learn how to wield them.
After Shepherd gets me away from Tony’s men, I discover that he’s a survivor, a fighter, and the only person who seems willing to help me when it feels like the whole world is against me. At first, I’m not sure if I can trust the man, but the more we get to know each other, the more I realize that he’s funny and kind of sweet. He’s determined to protect me, but he doesn’t know all of my secrets. He doesn’t know that Tony isn’t the only one looking for me. But together, as we face betrayal and taking down the worst monster of all, we’re determined that we will be the lucky ones after all.
Just My Luck is a 101k word book featuring two broken souls who find peace in each other. While it does have a mixture of action, humor, and Alice’s trademark snarky banter, there are moments that might be considered darker to some listeners.
REVIEW:
Killian is the Police Chief and he’s been abducted. Tony, the man who has taken him is interested in finding out what has happened to his daughter. He’s reported her missing to the police, but they decide she’s a runaway and hadn’t done a thing to help find her. Put a pin in that. It’s a detail that looms large. Tony thinks if he beats Killian and send the video to his father, then the police will have to do something. Turns out that’s a no.
Shepherd, one of Tony’s bodyguards, is tasked with trying to keep tabs on Killian. Shepherd was on the streets doing what he had to in order to survive when Tony plucked him out of the gutter to work for him. He’s done a lot of bad stuff. He seems unmoved by Killian being abused until Killian attempts to escape when it’s clear his father is not going to capitulate to Tony’s demands to help find his daughter.
Killian and Shepherd are on the run. Turns out Shepherd is not unmoved by Killian. And Killian has a lot of secrets too. After they are holed up in a cabin in the woods waiting to figure out their next move, they grow closer. Both of them have enough baggage to start a luggage store. There are so many secrets and situations that they have been through. Shepherd has killed a lot of people. He doesn’t think he’s worthy of anything good. Killian is no angel and he’s got a lot of guilt and horrors from his past as well. But maybe, just maybe, together they can have a different life? Well, if people would stop hunting them a trying to kill them.
I can’t figured out how I never knew about this book until the audio version came out – I thought I’d hit all of Alice’s releases. This story of two damaged and abused guys who end up saving each other in so many ways was a roller coaster ride. Shepherd’s past on the streets as a teenager and then being plucked into Tony’s employ and having to do any manner of terrible things is actually something that Killian CAN understand. He’s got his own very dark secrets. As Alice Winters books go, this is a bit darker in nature. Luckily there is enough humor and banter and push/pull between Shepherd and Killian to make the story enjoyable. Shepherd and Killian REALLY deserved their hard won HEA.
Declan Winters did a stellar job of narrating this story. There is a lot of angst and drama. The terror that Killian feels repeatedly is so pitch perfect. Shepherds regret and guilt is palpable. The bad guys are really terrible! There are a lot of emotions here and I though this performance was brilliant in bringing the exact right voices to this story. It’s a lot of action and suspense and humor and romance! Recommended.
