BLURB:

I’m the wild brother …

I live for the moment. For instant gratification.

And Deputy Dalton Harvey will bring me a lot of gratification.

He’s fighting our attraction, but I see the lust in his eyes. I don’t care that he’s slapped cuffs on me before and probably will again. It’ll just make it all the sweeter when he breaks.

When that happens, I’ll gladly dirty up that lawman and move on, like I always do. It doesn’t matter that Dalton is one of the best men I’ve met. Or that he’s sexy as sin with a sweet smile that always reaches his eyes. Everyone leaves in the end.

The only ones I trust are the strays I take in. The pets abandoned on the side of the road are thrown away just like me. I give them my heart because they’ll be unquestionably loyal to me.

Unlike humans.

Unlike Dalton.

He says he wants more. He has honorable intentions. But he just doesn’t understand.

He’ll leave too. He’ll have to when he becomes the sheriff this town needs.

I’m bad news. I’ll only drag him down with me. And he deserves better.

He just doesn’t know it yet.

Wild Card is Book 2 of Foster Bro Code about a group of brothers who live by a pact they made as kids to always have one another’s backs. Expect lawman/lawbreaker, sizzling hot hookups, pet rescues, and emotional healing. TW for childhood neglect and abandonment off page.

REVIEW:

I’m really invested in this series.  Having read the first book and seeing how mad Axel was at Gray when he came back, it’s clear that he has deep-seated abandonment issues.  Not without justification.  Axel has been abandonment by his parents, his foster mother died, his foster father turned into a problem and ran off Gray (without owning up to it) and then died leaving a huge mess for the brothers to clean up.  It’s understandable that Axel has focused his energy and caring on his abandoned dogs that he looks after in the junkyard rather that develop relationships with people are are likely to just leave him.  Again.  He’s got energy to burn and he’s a hookup king, but it’s just to let off steam.

Axel and Dalton, the Sheriff’s deputy who seems to always be around when Axel is getting into trouble, have been circling each other for a while.  Axel wants Dalton, but he in no way thinks that he either deserves someone like Dalton or that he is good enough for Dalton.  Dalton has his own issues from his past that he hasn’t necessarily dealt with either.  Between the two of them, they didn’t start out on the best footing.

Dalton is an absolutely rock solid guy.  He cares about Axel and he wants better for him.  He’s not only dealing with his growing feelings for Axel but with a bunch of department BS and pressure from others to take on the Sheriff job despite his protestations to the contrary.  Axel is known as a troublemaker – again, not without justification – but he’s an M&M.  Hard candy shell on the outside, melty chocolate on the inside 😉  There is a lot of push/pull throughout this story as these two guys try to negotiate their way to a real relationship.  That’s mostly Dalton pushing and Axel pulling away.  Dalton shows an incredible amount of patience with Axel and his barriers and behaviors.  Inevitably they have work to do to get past all the baggage they are each carrying.

The rest of the brothers are along for the ride.  Oh, and lots of pets too 😉  If you are a dog lover, you will enjoy those aspects of this story too.  I’m anxious to read the rest of these books – especially Holden who I’m sure is going to just break me!  This author has done a great job of making these characters flawed but definitely worthy characters.  They have a lot to learn and a lot to process and a lot to let go of, but they are learning that they do actually need others to help make that happen and to get on the road to healthy relationships and a brighter future.  Highly recommended.
