We’d shared a forever love. The kind they write stories about. A once in a lifetime chance at something special. For fourteen years Davis was my world. We were growing old together, fifties and counting. Then it was all ripped away in the blink of an eye.
We’d told each other everything, or so I thought. But secrets have a way of bubbling to the surface and it turned out Davis kept a few of his own. Hidden laptops, clandestine meetings, cryptic emails. The husband I’d believed in was a lie.
Or was he?
I have to find out. And Madigan Church is right there to help me. A complicated man. A man I wasn’t expecting. An attraction I can’t deny. Confusing. Challenging. Madigan makes me feel things I’m not ready for. Want things I don’t deserve. Not now. Maybe not ever again.
But with every step into the twisted mystery, the danger escalates. Neither of us is safe. Not from the truth, and not from what’s growing between us.
Because we aren’t the only ones on the hunt. Somewhere amongst my late husband’s secrets is something worth stealing, maybe even worth killing for.
And time is running out.
REVIEW:
Well, this is my first Jay Hogan book ever and man did I pick a winner!
Nick is a man who is stuck in time when he meets Madigan. His life is on hold while he struggles with the realities of his life. He feels lost and alone and when he meets Madigan, the spark he feels comes with a big dose of guilt.
Madigan keeps trying to convince himself that he’s happy with the life he’s made for himself. But maybe Nick isn’t the only one who feels.
This story is full of heartbreak. It made me cry more than once. Nick is in a situation that I can’t even imagine dealing with and narrator Gary Furlong brings the pain to life in all the best ways.
However, it’s not all sadness and pain. The banter between Nick and Madigan starts right from the beginning of their relationship and sometimes I was laughing out loud. (BTW when you do that on the bus people think your weird)
I love all the relationships in the story. Nick and his relationship with his mother-in-law and brother-in-law was amazing. It brought so much depth to the pain they were all going through.
Madigan and his friend and apprentice gave me a lot of smiles but also helped me really empathize with Madigan and his realizations about getting older and how feelings might change and evolve.
Of course there’s some thrills and chills going on as well. As the situation surrounding Nick’s husband intensified, I found myself wanting to yell at Nick to stop being so damn thick and open his eyes to what was going on around him!
There’s not a lot of sex in this book, but there is a LOT of sexual tension. And it’s gorgeous. Apparently Jay Hogan has perfected the art of the slow burn and it was lovely to see things progress at a more natural pace.
Narrator Gary Furlong is brilliant. He brings this story to life with a lot of heart. His voice is smooth and sexy but not campy. I could probably listen to this man read the phone book and I’d sigh with pleasure. It was his voice that really drove home the pain that both men were going through but also the growing happiness that both men rightly deserve. I will definitely be looking for more books that are narrated by him.
I am looking forward to the next book in this series and have no reservations about giving this book a hearty 5 out of 5!
