I wanted to be a ghost, to disappear, because people can’t find what they can’t see and can’t hurt what they can’t touch.
NOAH
My life is a blur of asphalt and regret, the highway my only refuge from a past that’s bruised and bloody.
By day, I crash in dingy motel rooms, chasing sleep that never comes.
By night, I drive, picking up strangers for fleeting trysts that keep the ghosts at bay.
But then I meet Seven: wild-eyed and dangerous.
One night should’ve been enough, but Seven’s touch lingers like a brand, promising something I’m too broken to name.
SEVEN
I’m running from the echoes of cult hymns that still claw at my mind.
Freedom came with a price: the body of a man in the trunk of my car.
My mother always said I was a lost cause with a pretty face.
She was right.
I hustle my body to survive.
But then I meet Noah.
One look, one spark, and a carefully buried hunger roars to life.
TOGETHER
We’re two fractured souls on a collision course, our meeting a lit match in a world soaked with gasoline.
We could burn it all down.
But when our ghosts catch up to us, will we save each other or become the wreckage that’s left behind?
Broken Highway is the first novel in a series of standalones. Each book can be read independently, as they are connected only by theme.
REVIEW:
Two guys running from some pretty big demons cross paths, and their lives are changed forever. At first glance, they don’t look like they have much in common. But that changes pretty quickly with each passing mile. Needless to say, their pasts play significant roles in their current situation/predicament, as well as their behavior and mannerisms. Noah being standoffish and not wanting any relationship, running immediately after sex, and Seven with his sex addiction tendencies and neediness, are ironically the same things that draw them to each other.
A quick hook up turns to more, and the only way to describe it is that they really just couldn’t resist each other, but not in a way that was fluffy or hokey. It just was. Seven didn’t really ever give Noah a chance, even without really trying. Noah tries to fight it, but every time, he is pulled back in for one reason or another, and each time, things get more dangerous for everyone involved.
These two have a lot of sex, down and dirty sex, and neither makes any excuses for it. Luckily, their insatiable appetites match up perfectly. I loved the interactions between these two lost souls. Their snark and banter never felt forced. As with everything in this story, it just was what it was. Their pasts are pretty tragic, but in the midst of trying to outrun them, they find each other and in doing so, end up with exactly what they were deprived of up until that point. I wanted to group hug these two in between every sweaty, messy session, but thankfully, after going through some more altercations, they were able to pull through and get it right in the end.
I really enjoyed the writing style of this debut author. I flew through this story and honestly wasn’t ready to say goodbye. Looks like the next ones will be about different characters, and while I’m a little disappointed we may not see Noah and Seven again, I’m really excited to see what comes next.
