Description

Hastings’ life is finally on track: a freshman on the Haversham University cross country team, independent, and on her own for the first time in nineteen years, she’s fit, frisky and finally free of the constraints of living back home in smalltown South Carolina. Free to be herself, to dip her toe into the waters of girl-on-girl romance for the first time in her life. And when she sets her eyes on the sultry redhead she sees conferring with their track coach one day, she’s sure she’s found the object of her affections. The girl who might finally take her V-card and teach her the ways of feminine affection, once and for all. The only problem: she’s the coach’s daughter!

Peyton Billings is at her third college in as many years, thanks to her father’s wandering eye, philandering zipper, and fiery tongue. Never one to play by the rules, Dawson Billings has been kicked off every track team he’s coached so far, finally landing him at the small, Division Three school of Haversham University. And, in the process, dragging his daughter Peyton along for the ride. She’s not happy about the move until she spots a fiery, sexy, long-limbed runner one day after practice, never sensing that Summer Hastings will be her undoing, in all the best possible ways.

“Wait, so…she’s the coach’s daughter?”

Summer looked up from Kendra’s phone, empty trays scattered in front of them at the cluttered cafeteria table where they sat. “I mean, that’s what the caption says…”

Kendra handed the phone over before reaching for the glass beside her. She slurped the last of her sweet tea until it gurgled annoyingly, crushed ice grinding along the glass in the absence of liquid. Summer ignored the sound in favor of the news story her new BFF had discovered, googling their new coach and, specifically, the red-haired beauty who’d stood so familiarly by his side as they finished their last few laps of practice.

The story was a puff piece from some local paper in upstate New York, the Pikesville Gazette. Dominating the sports page, it was titled, New Coach Makes Splash With Cross Country Team During Welcome Week Fun Fest. The “splash” in question was their new coach, full name Dawson Billings, emerging soaking wet from the dunking booth at some cheesy looking Fall Festival-type deal. Waiting for him in a second picture was the girl who’d been standing beside him at the track, radiant in a clingy striped sweater and holding out a towel almost dutifully. The caption beneath read, Proud daughter, Peyton Billings, was at the ready to offer her father a towel after his team gave him a good dunking…

Summer studied the picture carefully while Kendra nibbled the last of her cinnamon roll. As Kendra busied herself with wiping her sticky fingers, Summer memorized every curve and swerve of the figure beneath Peyton’s sweater. When she feared she’d been studying the picture too long, she offered the phone back ever so casually and rolled her eyes accordingly. “Happy now?”

Kendra did, indeed, look happy, her soft brown eyes aglow. “I mean, I was just curious.”

Summer couldn’t exactly blame her. “So, this whole time, you were jealous of Coach’s daughter?”

“Okay, okay, so sue me. I just wanted to know who my competition was, that’s all.”

“Competition? Kendra, he’s our coach. You get that, right?”

“I know that. A girl can dream, can’t she?”

Summer rolled her eyes again, hand drifting to her own swirly pink and blue recyclable to-go container full of Diet Squishy Cola. Kendra licked the last of the sticky icing from her fingers and wiped them before tossing the last spare napkin, curled and balled, onto her tray. “Listen, before you go thinking your new track pal is some sleaze bucket, let me just rewind the tape for you a bit.”

“I don’t think you’re a sleaze bucket, Kendra.”

Her new friend was, indeed, suspicious. “You don’t?”

“Sleaze babe, maybe, but not bucket.”

They giggled, freely and easily, the same way they had since they’d first met standing in line waiting to register for classes earlier that week. Summer had had a group of friends back home in Pelican Bay, South Carolina, a tiny coastal town not unlike the small college town that surrounded them now: teammates, kids she’d grown up with, classmates, the neighbor girl who lived down the street, but no bestie. More like acquaintances, thrown together by happenstance and class schedules and track meets, leading to temporary, if strong, friendships.

Still, she hadn’t felt particularly homesick since she’d arrived at Haversham, nor was she expecting to find such a kindred spirit in Kendra, laughing and joking and being sarcastic as they stood in line, dissecting the hairstyles and hemlines of the other girls while waiting to sign up for a full roster of fall classes.

Kendra explained all the same. “Listen, I went to Crestview Academy back home in Kentucky. Crestview All-Girls Academy, feel me? Pleated skirts and knee socks, the works. I didn’t mind it, per se, until kids I still kept with in touch on the outside were posting homecoming pics and prom dresses and selfies and I started to feel that itch, you know?”

Summer smiled, flashes of their coach’s daughter, soft and seductive by the side of the track only hours earlier, spinning through her mind and making her heart flutter. “Oh, I know, Kendra.”
