REVIEW:

Mr Shaw and Mr Bakshi’s tale was utterly delightful. I was captivated by the writing, glimpses of humour poking between soft rich clouds of emotion as these navigate a mystery and significant turns in circumstances.

Warren is a good responsible younger son in a Punjabi household led by a slightly ailing matriarch. However he balances this serious endeavour with his job as the cavalier and flirty barkeep persona at his place of work. The late 1800s are fraught times for people who are gay and the fear of the law is paralysing, so his job is the one place he can be himself. Matthew is the opposite of him in many ways, balancing his need to do the right thing with holding tightly to the only real home he has known, The Met, even if he can never be himself.

Through a series of circumstances Mr Bakshi ends up helping Mr Shaw and they both sort of find themselves and each other despite all the shifts and movements that are causing upheavals in their lives. The prose is just absolutely romantic, the showing of love vs the telling of it is so very present in all the ways their story comes together and it really did make me swoon.

It took me a quick minute to get into it at the beginning but very soon I was unable to put it down and was drawn away into 19th century London where a love story was coming to life.

Expect diva doggies, perplexing art classes, can I draw you swoon, found family of the best kind, possible pirates and a lot more!
