PUBLISHER: Rocky Ridge Books
LENGTH: 504 pages
RELEASE DATE: June 14, 2025
BLURB:
One man is a king, the other a warrior.
Commander Rufe Ferund, branded a traitor with a tattoo for all to see, must fight his way up the military ladder and restore his reputation. Does this include feeling worthy of the love of a king—even an enemy king?
King Niam knows the Cormiran Empire has long wanted to take the kingdom of Delletina as its own, but he’ll only make a deal with a new emperor since the former ruler conspired to take the country by force. Cormirans are vile, or so Niam has been told.
Then a handsome Cormiran soldier stumbles onto his lands, offering a chance to size up the enemy for himself—and he realizes Rufe might not be the contemptible barbarian Niam formerly believed Cormirans to be.
But could there be more between them? Could the fire they feel in their souls lead to something else beyond a mere dalliance?
Traitors, court intrigue, and unseen dangers force the two closer together, while an old enemy hides in the shadows, ready to threaten Niam’s reign, and even their lives.
REVIEW:
Note: Overlapping timelines in this book necessarily contain spoilers for the first book in this series. Proceed at your own risk 😉
King Niam of Delletina finds himself in a difficult position. He’s got enemies on all sides. But when Rufe, a wounded soldier of Cormiran ends up as his guest, he doesn’t reveal his true identity. And well maybe things aren’t exactly as he has believed about Cormiran either??
It seems that there are no end to the obstacles that Niam faces. He is facing betrayal by his own nobles and isn’t sure who he can trust. Then there is the threat of war with the empire (carry over from the first book). But when the King Draylon suggests that Niam let Rufe help, things get interesting.
As Niam and Rufe work together, their connection deepens. But their backgrounds are so different. Can they overcome both the internal and external forces that threaten their grown love for each other??
I was SO excited to see the next book in this series almost two years after the first one. I loved Dray and Yarif’s story and I wasn’t sure how Ms. Winters was going to top that one. I must say that the second book is every bit as compelling as the first one. Even though this isn’t generally my favorite type of story (like I wouldn’t automatically pick up this book), I continue to be impressed with just how well written this story is. Fair warning that it should be read after the first one as there is major storyline overlap here (just told from different perspectives) and as such, offers major spoilers to the first story 😉 That being said, this story is another fast paced read that kept me reading to find out what would happen next. I loved seeing Dray and Yarif here again, but they don’t take over this story – Niam and Rufe are definitely the stars. There are some great supporting characters here as well – including Niam’s mother. Both characters here struggle with their stations in life and feel unworthy or “not enough” for the other. As they face the many obstacles before them together, slowly they come to realize that they are enough for the other. It’s steamy and a bit angsty and romantic as well. I highly recommend this series and hope that we will see more in this world.
