What do you do when you’re a hitman … who’s terrible at his job?

At first, I thought it would be an easy payday. A few pew pews for bad people, a couple of suitcases of cash for me. People have done worse for an honest living. Probably.

The problem is that after a couple jobs, I’ve never actually managed to unalive someone, and not for lack of trying. Apparently, a basic requirement of a hitman is being a good shot.

Despite my constant duck-ups–that my boss knows nothing about–I’m given another name, and I very nearly follow through. Only after obliterating this guy’s ear, and his fervent pleading to spare him, I’ve sent him into hiding and collected the cash anyway.

But wanted people are hard to hide, and bad guys don’t like paying big money for loose ends.

Now that Van Gogh has shown his face again—sans ear—I’ve scammed my way into his security team, which is sort of ideal since I’m now highly wanted as well.

Unfortunately, we have some “trust issues” to “work through” from our meet-shoot, and with the gorgeous bastard’s brother missing, he refuses to lay low until they’re reunited.

I’m not sold on the plan honestly, but this guy has me questioning my sexuality along with my career path, and I’m at the point where I’m determined to see a job through to the end.

Or die trying.

But hey, at least then I’d finally deliver a body.

REVIEW:

Perry is so tired of disappointing his sister.   He’s broke and he’s tired of asking for help.  He lives in a dump, is behind on all his bills and his closest companion is the mouse who lives in his apartment too.  He listens in on conversations in a bar and decides he wants in on the action.   So he becomes an apprentice hitman.  Oh my.  This isn’t going to end well ;

Reilly St. Clare is not having a great day.  He’s worried about his missing brother and he’s not sure what is going on, but he believes that the nightclub down the street is behind it.  He leaves his best friend/bodyguard to go talk to the owner of the other club to try to settle their differences and hopefully appeal to get his brother back from wherever he seems to have gone.  But he’s followed by the world’s worst hitman.  When the hitman shoots him in the ear and then makes him pinky swear to just disappear and they’ll call it even, he can’t believe it but he doesn’t want to die so he agreed.

Reilly does NOT stay hidden.  And now he’s got a coffee obsession.  But his would be killer shows up AGAIN in his own office and tells him he is going to have to kill him after all since he didn’t stay hidden.  This time, however, St. Clare recognizes the guy.   And he’s not going to let this go.

When St. Clare tries to confront the failed hitman, aka Perry, things go south.  Somebody starts shooting at Perry and now they are BOTH in danger.  So they have to go on the run.  But Perry is supposed to bring dinner to his sister and her girlfriend and he refuses to not see her and get help and give her a heads up.

Lars and Reilly and Perry are hiding out then in a borrowed apartment and Perry decides he’s going to try to get out of this whole thing.  Things go from bad to worse of course, because he’s taken money for three hits he didn’t carry out.  The head guy is NOT happy and neither is his client.  Perry as a week to bring in Reilly dead or alive.  Ha!  If only!

So this is a little embarrassing, but it appears I’ve only read one Saxon James book before this one :P.  Now I’m wondering what else I might have missed that I need to find immediately!  First, this was hilarious.  Given the state of the world right now, I can use some damn humor!  Perry is a hoot!  I mean, you definitely have to suspend disbelief for just how clueless he is, but dang he is a hilarious golden retriever energy guy.  St. Clare is drawn to Perry and can’t believe he’s flirting with his would-be killer.  Besides, does Perry even like guys?  Well perhaps this guy 😉  Their chemistry and banter and back and forth is both funny and a bit charming.  Lars and Perry’s band of “associates” get into the act too.  It’s a madcap adventure for these two as they try to find a way out of this total mess.  It’s OTT and I am here for it!

Oh my absolute favorite duet narrators, Tim Paige and Liam DiCosimo do a tremendous job with this book.  I LOVE their playing off of each other.  Mr. DeCosimo is PERFECT as the adorable and clueless Perry who really tries so hard, but constantly fails.  Mr. Paige does a fantastic job with Reilly St. Clare who is disgruntled and grouchy but somehow weirdly attracted to his would-be hitman.  This is definitely one of my favorites of their shared works.  Humor and heart are abundant in this unexpected romp.  Recommended!
