What happens when fate intertwines shifters from land and sea?

Dr. Everett Voda loves a challenge, which is why he’s spent his entire medical career traveling the world, helping shifters in remote areas. There has rarely been a problem he can’t solve, but Merritt Lucas might be the exception to that rule. Everett can’t figure out what’s wrong with Merritt, and his attraction to the younger wolf is starting to become a distraction, especially since they are about to spend a lot of time alone together.

Merritt doesn’t have much going for him. He doesn’t have a pack. He doesn’t have a secondary gender scent. And he’s fallen hopelessly head over heels for an alpha he can’t have. But that doesn’t stop him from taking Everett up on his offer to see the world and experience some of the shifter cultures he has only read about.

But Everett has hidden motives for the trip, and big changes are on the horizon for Merritt and Everett, changes that will either drive them apart or bond them for life.

Contains mature themes.

REVIEW:

Note:  This is the second book in this series and as such, there are major spoilers for the events of the first book in this one.  That being said, it can be read as a standalone as there is enough background about those events and this shifter world covered here as well.

We met Everett and Merritt in the first book in this series.  This story begins after the events of that book and Everett, a Beluga whale shifter, and Merritt, a wolf shifter who struggles with controlling his wolf, are on a trip to visit a parliament of owl shifters in Greece.  Demetra, the head of this compound is an old friend of Everett’s and he’s been allowed to bring Merritt in to observe the mating rituals and how the group so all female shifters operates.  It’s fascinating for Merritt to see other shifter groups and their habits as part of this PhD research.  He also develops a real friendship with some of the younger members of the group.

Unfortunately for Merritt, he is still dealing with issues because he does not have a pack.  Due to circumstances beyond his control, his family is no help and he has been relying on his best friend  Jonah, a lynx shifter for companionship.  The longer he’s away from Jonah though, the worse he feels and the less he’s able to control his shift.  Everett has been drawn to the little wolf since he met him.  He can’t figure out what is wrong with Merritt.  Everyone has assumed that Merritt is a beta based on the fact that he doesn’t have a secondary scent marking him as an omega or an alpha.  Despite Everett’s attempts to help Merritt, he’s getting weaker and sicker and even less able to control his shift.

There is one possible solution though.  There is a pack in Italy that welcomes all shifters and the magic of this pack is sustained for a year between pack gatherings.  If Merritt agrees to and is accepted as a member of this pack, then hopefully he will no longer be unable to thrive.  This is a big step for him and he feels a bit off balance and betrayed by this idea and how late he is learning about it.

In addition, the pull between Merritt and Everett keeps getting stronger.  Everett does not want to push Merritt, but he knows he can be good for him.  And it appears other think so as well 😉  There are quite a few surprises in store for these two in fact.

I enjoyed this story I think more than the first one.  Merritt is such a sweet guy.  He’s not wrong in getting his dander up that his friends have planned things behind his back.  Even if it was with the best of intentions, it was a little bit insulting.  I really liked how this wasn’t a typical mpreg story and I really liked the way the author handled the question of not everyone who CAN carry a child wants to or should have to do so.  The way this family grows is a bit tragic and then completely adorable!  I loved how Everett always had Merritt’s comfort and care and health in mind.  He could have taken advantage of Merritt’s need for him, but he didn’t.

Declan Winters continues his winning performances with this next book in this series.  There are a LOT more characters and accents and locations and action in this one compared to the first one.  There is Greece and Italy and then Florida locations and characters, all distinct in accent and language structure.  I love how the narrator brought all these characters to life.  There were a lot of ups and downs in this story, but the emotional pitch was spot on.  Another excellent audio experience.  Recommended!
