Liam
Despite winning Gabriel’s heart, my trials are not yet over when I’m stuck competing with Gabriel’s cat for his affection (why is she only evil when he’s not looking?), dealing with coworkers trying to befriend me (I should have blackmailed more of them), and worst of all… meeting Gabriel’s parents (whose affection I will win with lavish presents).
Oh, and hunting down another killer. Though that’s the easy part.
But when a crime scene brings me face-to-face with someone from my past, I realize I might have to fight to keep my secrets hidden from those who would tear me away from Gabriel forever.
Gabriel
Tackling Liam’s foster sister to the ground outside of a crime scene is the last thing I expected to do. It’s clear she needs help, and Liam might be the only person who can assist her. People are turning up dead, but if we fail to find the connection between them before it’s too late, innocent people might end up taking the fall or piquing the serial killer’s interest.
Thankfully, Liam’s no stranger to challenges as he draws me further into his secretive world where the vilest of humanity reside around every corner. He’s opening my eyes and making me fall even deeper in love with every breath as I realize that his darkness isn’t driving me away but pulling me even closer.
This man who is willing to burn the world down for me doesn’t realize just how far I’d go for him.
REVIEW:
Note: This is the second in a series and should be listened to after the first book. There is too much in Liam’s past to understanding who he is that is covered thoroughly in that book. It also sets him up with Gabriel – his partner in life as well as in the Homicide department.
Ok. Wow! This book starts off with a bang.
Once again, Liam and Gabriel get called into investigate a murder. What they don’t expect is for the prime suspect to be someone who had lived in the same foster home Liam had been sent to after his parents were murdered. Abby swears she didn’t have anything to do with the murder and that she went to the house in question to see her friend Mitch. But he wasn’t there and when she saw the dead guy, she panicked and ran and broke into the vacant house for sale next door. Weird. There was a call in of a gunshot, but Abby didn’t have a gun. She though maybe someone was shooting at her.
Liam hasn’t seen Abby in like 20 years. She was a wild child and had a very bad home life. Junkie mom, policeman dad who it turns out was quite abusive. And not just with his own daughter. Due to unforeseen circumstances, Abby uses what she learns about Liam and his past to get him to do her bidding. What she knows about Liam could unravel his entire life. And since she keeps finding dead bodies, well something more sinister seems to be at play here. And it seems to involved a lot of Abby’s “friends” from when they were in the foster home together. Liam isn’t sure he believes everything she says, but then she’s out of commission and bodies keep turning up. Let’s just say that the events surrounding all this mayhem get more and more bizarre.
Meanwhile, Liam has decided to woo Gabriel by buying him a house. After a month of dating. Hmmmm. Maybe a bit over the top? Also he has to meet Gabriel’s parents. And his sister. He doesn’t exactly do people. But he knows he has to act like a human in order to win over Gabriel’s family and keep Gabriel by his side.
Gabriel is still struggling with Liam’s methods of dealing with those who would continue to hurt others and get away with it. He’s still in awe of Liam’s brilliance as a detective and also how he thinks everything through. He’s still not happy about it, but he’s not going to condemn Liam for doing what he thinks is right. This gets a little dicey at times and when they are in danger, he knows that Liam has his back and he has Liam’s.
I absolutely loved this story. Liam’s past was BRUTAL. The fact that he’s functional is pretty amazing. He’s got a different sort of moral compass, but he tries to make sure he keeps predators from hurting anyone else. He knows better than most what that means. There are plenty of light and humorous moments too. Dealing with Jesse, the ME and Michaels at the precinct are particularly amusing. His internal struggle with trying to act “normal” around Gabriel’s family is actually pretty hilarious. The gifts, the meals, I honestly found it both touching and amusing. I could happy consume stories about these two forever.
Greg Boudreaux does a thoroughly amazing job with this narration. Liam’s voice kills me. It so dry. So hilarious. So consistent. Gabriel is the voice of reason and he has to break through Liam’s walls. The rest of the officers and Gabriel’s family are so on point. This is truly one of my favorite performances. So many voices, so many characters and yet I never struggles to know who was speaking. The story is fast and furious and in the end Gabe and Liam are closer than ever. Along with their cats 😉
Highly recommended! I sure hope we got more stories in this world 😀
