REVIEW:
Note: This is the third in the series and it is required to read this series in order.
Well things keep going from bad to worse with Cael. He’s been forced do things he would not every do in order to save his own family. When he wakes up from the false death, he and Quin have to run. They have to be in disguise since there are wanted posters everywhere for Quin. They are trying to stay one step ahead of the redcoats who have been sent by the Regent, Quin and Nico’s uncle, to find the king and bring him back to face “justice” from the Regent.
Quin is captured and it’s up to Cael to free him, but his plans are thwarted. Along they way they have dodge the redcoats and a vengeful ex. Both Quin and Cael will need their wits about them to stay out of the line of fire and try to make it to their allies.
When they end up in a small village after being left without money or provisions they discover things are worse than they feared. Not only are there sick wyverns and illness spreading, but the village is also without healing provision or much food – which has been confiscated by the redcoats for the royal city. There are healing herbs within reach but there is also a deadly fog that keeps them from being attainable. Cael and the local healer Olyn do their best to try go help the sick and the dying.
Quin and Cael catch a few lucky breaks and they each make a lot of sacrifices. When they finally think they are going to be able to get out of town and one their way, a visitor arrives that unsettles both men. Then disaster really strikes. Cael is left in a state he never ever imagined.
So there was a lot of action in this one. Quin and Cael are able to dodge a LOT of metaphorical bullets as they ride out the illness and make friends in the village. Turns out there are enemies and bad actors everywhere including the magistrates of the town. Some former enemies MAY be softening, but the final battle of this story leaves many things up in the air. Cael loses something he holds most dear and he and Quin are not in a good place. The slow burn is almost non-existent in this book as Quin and Cael are truly trying to survive. The twist at the end of the book was really unexpected and I have no idea how things will go in the next part of this journey.
