BLURB:
Two men. Three secrets. Denial of a fated mate bond. And a future that might already be set.
To the rest of the world, Calisto Dominguez is just a necromancer. Not a man with special abilities whose imaginary childhood friend isn’t so imaginary. Good. One catastrophic mistake is enough when the last one still haunts him.
Asher Baines has secrets of his own. Chief among them, the rare ability of precognition, and the fact that he only took the job at the PPB to keep Calisto safe. Calisto can deny it all he wants, but he is Asher’s fated mate.
When an old foe reappears hellbent on getting Calisto to do the one thing he’s vowed never to do again, navigating their complicated romantic relationship is the least of their problems.
Their future depends on outwitting the villainous O’Reilly, but it’s going to take a lot of spilled secrets, some harsh self-realization, and putting their lives on the line to reach that point.
And even Asher doesn’t know how it’s going to end.
The Big Adios is a fated mates, opposites attract, forced proximity MM paranormal romance featuring an MC who needs to work out how to be less nice if he wants to survive, a man who comes across as having ice in his veins, but is all fire when it counts, a long-dead, sex-obsessed ex-psychic sidekick, help from some familiar faces, and a villain long due their comeuppance.
As this is the third book in the Paranormal Problems trilogy, I would advise reading Deader than Dead or Dropping Like Flies first, or even better both.
REVIEW:
What happens when a precog, a necromancer and a deranged intelligent baddie end up in a book? A danged good story – that’s what. Asher wants Calisto. O’Reilly wants Calisto. Calisto has reservations regarding the motivations of both—no wonder the man is split in two. Everyone has secrets. Calisto has abilities he’s been denying, so what is he actually capable of? Is he the one who can save the day?
The Big Adios is book three in the Paranormal Problems series that features different people from the same agency in each book. The story has a measured build-up to a big finish, filled with entertaining family dynamics, I’ll wait till you’re ready, romance, and drama that the reader knows must come to a head. I thoroughly enjoyed the story, and the only reason the tale doesn’t get full marks is that I had a what, how, I thought… moment that will hopefully be answered in the next instalment.
The story is told in the first person from Calisto and Asher’s viewpoints. Worldbuilding has evolved over the series, so prior reading is recommended. Characters and previous situations feature in conversations, adding understanding to the drama.
Calisto is the quiet one in the necromancer department, but that doesn’t mean he’s a rollover. Calisto is part of a large, totally accepting family whose banter and caring nature range from motherly to boisterous. Therefore, he has learned the art of getting his way – the quieter way, while keeping the peace.
Asher is an only child from money who joined the agency because he knew that Calisto was his fated mate. However, being able to see the future can be dangerous, and trying to change it has consequences. Therefore, it takes immense personal restraint that gives him the appearance of cold, unflappability. Underneath, he is a man of intense emotion – a kind of precog Spock.
The extended cast is not extensive, though they are entertaining. The best of a super bunch is Baxter, the ghostly sidekick, who steals the show.
In essence, The Big Adios is a super addition to the Paranormal Problems series. It made me smile and had some heat, with lovely characters who find even more inner metal than they thought possible, alongside essential drama that kept me turning the page.
