Detective Sergeant Aaron Fowler of the Metropolitan Police doesn’t count himself a gullible man. When he encounters a graphologist who deduces people’s lives and personalities from their handwriting with impossible accuracy, he needs to find out how the trick is done. Even if that involves spending more time with the intriguing, flirtatious Joel Wildsmith than feels quite safe.

Joel’s not an admirer of the police, but DS Fowler has the most irresistible handwriting he’s ever seen. If the policeman’s tests let him spend time unnerving the handsome copper, why not play along?

But when Joel looks at a powerful man’s handwriting and sees a murderer, the policeman and the graphologist are plunged into deadly danger. Their enemy will protect himself at any cost–unless the sparring pair can come together to prove his guilt and save each other.

REVIEW:

Oh my friends!  What a delightful new novel from KJ Charles.  This is quite the slow burn mystery with a spookily skilled graphologist and a police officer who always wants to do the right thing.  There is drama and suspense and bad actors all round.

Aaron’s Fowler’s cousin Paul is determined to use him to intimidate a graphologist who has done a reading for the cousin’s fiance.  She has called off the engagement and Paul is livid.  When Aaron visits this graphologist, Joel Wildsmith, he is surprised by the man.  He’s also quite intrigued because the man was on the money about the handwriting that he had him read for comparison.  Like scarily accurate.  He agrees to talk to his cousin and tell him too bad so sad.  But then a colleague goes to Joel and basically warns him off too.  Much to Joel and Aaron’s chagrin.

Aaron can’t let this go though, so he devises a test.  This involves suspects in a case that is not his.  He doesn’t even know what kind of case it is.  It’s like a blind study with real drugs and placebos.  But when the results are in, Joel once again is scarily accurate.  Unfortunately for Aaron, the placebo samples are proving to be a much much bigger problem than the original case.  And both Joel and Aaron end up in the crosshairs of some very very dangerous men.  And given their “relationship” and their pasts and Aaron’s family connections, this could indeed go very very badly for them.

I won’t spoil the plot though, so you’ll have to read for yourself how these two manage 🙂  I absolutely loved everything about this story!  The setting, the characters, the mystery, the backstories of both characters.  There is heat and passion and a slow building relationship that kept me reading faster and faster to see how this would all wind up.  Let’s just say I was definitely NOT disappointed!  Fans of this author will really enjoy this historical story of two men who haven’t found much happiness in life finding support and happiness together in the face of some rather unpleasant circumstances.   The slow burn and push/pull of these two was so well done.   Highly recommended!
