The Thrilling Last Story in the Fire Lake Series

THE INVISIBLE MAN

A cop down to his bones, Detective Ray Sommers has seen it all, and knows how to trust his instincts.

While visiting an old friend, he finds what he knows with what he sees colliding right in front of his eyes. A man has appeared from out of nowhere. Literally. And in more ways than one, Ray’s visit has gotten way more complicated.

Darren, aka Ghost, ran from his traumatic past taking with him some unbelievable secrets. But now he’s found a family where he’s been accepted for the first time in his life.

Ray and Darren’s initial encounter might’ve been a bit unorthodox, but interest sparks and their attraction is undeniable.

Ghost and his Fire Lake family are targeted by a powerful and ruthless man, and they fight back with every weapon they have—of which Ghost is one.

Now that he’s found someone who genuinely sees him, he’s not sure he’ll live long enough to enjoy him.

REVIEW:

Visiting his friend, Brick, Detective Ray suddenly encounters Darren, aka Ghost, practising his skills. After some initial shock and being brought up to speed on the Noah group, Ray and Ghost get closer. But with Ghost being a prize on the Noah Groups list, will he live long enough to have something meaningful with Ray?

This is the ninth and last book in the current Fire Lake series about the Noah Group, and it was lovely to have some closure, especially regarding the series’ Sophia arc. However, while it marks the end of one series, it is not the end of the story, as one of the newbies travels to New York to seek out the Apollo group that assisted Brick and his merry men earlier in the series. I look forward to seeing some Fire Lake guys make cameos in future stories.

Like the other books, Ghost is written in the third person from the viewpoints of Ray and Ghost. Worldbuilding has built up over the series, and while I love these characters, it was the right time to call it a day on their run. Nonetheless, classic to the genre of having a bunch of police, marines, SEALS, and other specialists is that the reader is guaranteed to have shootouts and something blown up – awesome.

Ray is a detective and a native of the area, with the stature of a lumberjack. He’s a tough SOB, but his childhood in the town is his vulnerability, as growing up as a cop’s son wasn’t easy. Meeting Ghost brings out every protective instinct, whether or not he needs it. So, there is an element of instalove, which some may like, others not.

Ghost is still finding his feet within the Fire Lake family. He has abilities, secrets, and has lived a life of survival over relationships, which makes him skittish as a colt. But when the right person comes along… ya gotta give it a whirl.

In this age of genetic manipulation, the range of abilities is reaching. The only iddy niggle I had was the convenience of a tracker turning up at the exact right time. But, hey ho, that’s fiction for you, and one could argue that fate had a hand in things. What I like about the Fire Lake books is that they have enough depth, humor, twists and turns to keep me turning the page, yet they are easy to follow, with catch-up points along the way. Kudos to M Tasia for thinking of the reader and the story. The way the boys close ranks to look after their own and take in those who need a home was a pleasure to read.
