Author Monthly Post – Anne Barwell – Who Wants To Live Forever?

My sale ebook this month is Shades of Sepia, the book that kicked off The Sleepless City series/shared universe.

I’ve always been fascinated by fictional vampires, and one of the reasons for that is immortality and losing people you love who aren’t. While the vampires that inhabit the universe I shared with Elizabeth Noble aren’t immortal, they do age much slower than humans, with werewolves somewhere in between.

One of my MCs, Simon, is a vampire who was turned during WWI at the Somme. He’s lost several people he’s cared about, some because of their shorter lifespan, others for more violent reasons. He’s determined not to fall for someone again… but of course, that doesn’t work out for several reasons.

Found family is also a theme that runs through the series, with their friendships lasting decades and longer. Simon and his found/chosen family have had each other’s backs for a long time, and although newcomers join them, that isn’t going to change anytime soon.

Having a long life has some benefits too.

To be soulmates they first have to survive.

A serial killer stalks the streets of Boggslake, Ohio. The victims are always found in pairs, one human and one vampire.

Simon Hawthorne has been a vampire for nearly a hundred years, and he has never seen anything like it. Neither have the other supernaturals he works with to keep the streets safe for both their kind and the humans.

One meeting with Simon finds Ben Leyton falling for a man he knows is keeping secrets, but he can’t ignore the growing attraction between them. A recent arrival in Boggslake, Ben finds it very different from his native New Zealand, but something about Simon makes Ben feel as though he’s found a new home.

After a close friend falls victim to the killer, Simon is torn between revealing his true nature to Ben, and walking away to avoid the reaction he fears. But with the body count rising and the murders becoming more frequent, either, or both of them, could be the killer’s next target.

Author’s note: This story was originally released by another publisher. This edition has been revised and re-edited with the end result being a better, stronger story.
