“Sometimes the needle of life skips a groove on the record. Sometimes we have to go back to the start of the song and begin all over again. Sometimes we have to learn to move in time to a strange new melody, one we don’t know the steps to. But if our hearts keep beating in time with the music, then maybe… just maybe… we’ll learn to dance again.” —Lovesong Valentin

When life deals him an unexpected blow, freelance music journalist Noah Van Owen decides to leave his New York home for the backwoods and bayous of Louisiana in search of a man named Lafayette Valentin.

He knows nothing about the stranger who inadvertantly set in motion the events that turned his life upside-down… nothing but the man’s name, an address, and the fact that he is a music prodigy, a gifted artist capable of playing any instrument like he was casting a spell.

What Noah doesn’t know is that Lafayette Valentin—known in his remote hometown in the deep south as ‘Lovesong’—is blind, angry, heartbroken… and determined to make a deal with the Devil himself.

As two men stand at a crossroads in their lives, will their destinies intersect? Will one of them sell his soul while the other loses his to grief and despair? Or will Noah learn to dance once again… in the arms of a Boy Called Lovesong?

REVIEW:

This was a different kind of story that I totally was not expecting. It starts out one way, quickly changes direction and then veers again in another.

It’s hard to not give too much away on this one, but Noah ends up on a journey hell bent on revenge only to find Lovesong is not quite what he expected to find at the other end. His whole perspective on life is changed by meeting Lovesong in ways that will quickly become obvious when the reader meets him as well.

Lovesong has a story all of his own with its own mystery and folklore, as well as how his life came to be and how he is connected and seems to fit into Noah’s life. He is a simple man living a very simple life, but the reasons behind that are what make up the interesting aspects of his story. There are some things he seems extremely proficient in that wasn’t expected, but his story is still extremely intriguing all the same.

While Noah is there getting to know Lovesong, he learns more about his backstory and the town that he is tied to. There are a number of interesting and likeable characters, and a few unlikeable ones as well. He is from a very small backwoods southern bayou town that picks cotton old school. It seems they are all stuck in time but are happy that way and have no interest in changing. Unfortunately for Lovesong, his talents are being wasted there.

Suffice to say, the story surrounding Lovesong is tightly woven but is quickly being unraveled by Noah. I loved how the musical aspects all tied together throughout. My only real niggle about this was the insta-lust/love aspects involving Noah and Lovesong which I found to be rather unbelievable, but there are a number of other pieces that don’t seem very believable as well, so I just chalked it up to being done on purpose and enjoyed it for the mystery/suspense tale that it was. So, if you are looking for something a bit different with some colorful characters, be sure to check this out.
