Tom didn’t wake all at once. He cracked open his eyelids, noting that it was still full night. He yawned, careful not to stretch and accidentally hit Kailee, who had been curled up beside him when he went to sleep. He couldn’t feel her touching him but that was all right. He’d never slept with someone either and he didn’t know how she felt about sharing a bed.
He listened for her breathing but heard nothing to disturb the silence. Frowning, he whispered, “Kailee, are you awake?”
She didn’t answer.
Suddenly not sleepy anymore, he rolled over, still being careful in case she was actually there and just not making any noise.
Except for him, the bed was empty.
Where had she gone? Why hadn’t she woken him?
A terrible thought crystalized in his head. What if the reason the sheets were cool under his hand was that she’d been spirited from the bed some time ago? He wouldn’t put it past the basilisks to steal her away in the hopes of luring him back.
Knowing it was useless, he still tried scenting the air for his captors’ supposedly unique aromas. According to his aunt, basilisks smelled like boiled chicken.
He couldn’t detect anything like poultry but still his heart pounded. What was he playing at, pretending he could learn anything through his nose? He scowled, frustrated with himself. Could he possibly be a real dragon without at least one keen sense?
That made him think of the room around him, which slumbered in darkness. He turned his head, scanning his surroundings. Nothing looked disturbed, or much changed, as would have probably been the case if Kailee had been taken. Then he noticed her clothing, which she’d piled on a chair before they’d fallen asleep, was missing. Maybe she’d just gone to get a drink of water or something?
He muttered, “Then the sheets shouldn’t be stone cold.”
He got out of bed, grabbing his jeans and yanking them up his legs. He didn’t bother with any other clothes, but when he was decent, he hesitated. Should he wake Taube Georg or any of the other werewolves?
Probably not, he decided as he stood, irresolute, near the bed. He didn’t want to panic anyone, not when his own heart thundered in his chest. He was surely being paranoid.
There were other reasons she could be gone. Maybe she, virgin that she’d been, had needed a little privacy.
The thought of her small, narrow cock, of seeing it for the first time, of understanding that he could, in fact, have everything he’d ever wanted sexually, distracted him for only a moment. Then he took a cautious step toward the door.
