I’ve always been fascinated by the time periods around the world wars, and how war brings out the best and worst in people.
When I wrote the series there wasn’t much in the way of historical action drama with gay leads, and I wanted to read it, so I wrote it. I’m happy that’s changed now and there’s so much more out there to read.
Writing an historical isn’t just about checking historical facts, but also needing to get the geography of the time right too. At one point I wanted a park setting but research quickly showed that the perfect place was a train station back then so that wouldn’t work.
I also didn’t want to write a story with racial stereotypes, and I wanted a balanced viewpoint with a diverse cast to explore different perspectives. There are always good and not so good people within communities, and some who fight to save the underdog, and others who, with a bit of power, are happy to stomp all over them.
Sadly, present events are showing that not much has changed in that regard ☹
