Nico
I spent four years in prison for something I didn’t do. I missed the birth of my son and was unable to save his mother from a vicious ex-boyfriend. I am not the man I was when I went in. Too much has happened. Now, with the help of a group of people I hardly know, I’m trying make a new start for myself and my son. I never expected to meet someone like Gabe. He’s funny, kind, and so protective. I’m not used to someone having my back like he does. Now I just have to allow myself to trust again.
Gabe
Being a Navy SEAL was supposed to be my life. Then I messed up and had to leave or face a court martial. Lucky for me, my former senior chief, Marco D’Angelo, has a job waiting for me when I get out. The job at Angel Security comes with a group of men and women who have quickly become like family to me. Meeting Nico is a revelation. I thought I would only love once in my life. It turns out I was wrong. Nico’s sweet nature, hidden beneath his gruff, tattooed exterior, draws me in and I’m lost. If only I can get him to believe in me.
REVIEW:
This is the kick-off to a new series focusing on the staff of Angel security. For fans of this author’s Down the Shore series, a number of the supporting cast of characters in tis new series will be familiar. There is Sean and Liam and their partners, and the D’Angelos as well as Miguel and Zach who work for Sean the local hotel that serves as a jumping off point for that series. That being said, it might be a bit to keep all the names/couples straight, but I think that hopefully the reader won’t be lost. This story starts pretty much after the events of the last book in that series and focusses on Nico who is the father of Zach’s sister’s son. There is some crossover with the events of that book and major spoilers for that story, so if you intend to read Sunrise, I would suggest doing that first if you don’t want to know the outcome 😉
Nico is finally getting out of prison after being railroaded by the wrong crowd he fell in with. He’s lost four years of his life and most importantly four years of his young son Cody’s life. Cody’s mother is gone and Cody’s been living with her brother and his partner. He’s doing as well as can be expected and luckily Zach has been willing to keep the lines of communication open and provide Nico with a place to land after getting out of prison. Nico is grateful and he has a lot to do in order to reclaim his life and build a new one with his son.
Gabe is as former Navy SEAL who is not working with the D’Angelo’s personal security firm. They do personal close security, event security, emergency extraction, etc. It’s a bunch of former military who are very good at their jobs. Gabe finds himself wanting to help Nico and so he suggests that he work with the security firm while he’s waiting to take his contractors exam again to continue his electrician apprenticeship. Nico needs to have steady employment and a place to live if he’s ever going to get custody of his son.
Nico agrees to the plan and things go pretty well. He’s happy to have something to do and to make some money. He really struggles to basically sleep on the couch of Zach and Miguel’s apartment. Nobody has any privacy and it’s not a long term solution.
Gabe has a big house to himself that he’s recently renovated. Frankly he’s a bit lonely. He has the idea to have Nico move in with him – paying rend of course to make Nico agree. They will set up a space for Cody so that he can spend time with his dad. This seems to be a workable solution. Except that everyone else can see that there is an attraction between the two 🙂
Unfortunately Nico is not at a place where he can act on this attraction. Turns out he’s got trauma to deal with from his time in prison. He suffers from PTSD and flashbacks which Gabe recognizes immediately. While still in prison, Nico was basically blamed for his own victimization and so he has not dealt with the trauma and is reluctant to go into therapy for help. It takes a bit for Gabe and the guys to convince him that he needs and deserves support.
In he meantime, both Gabe and Nico have family issues that they both need to deal with. Some of them are overlapping. Nico really wants to build something with Gabe but he’s going to have to go slowly. He’s got a lot to work through and a lot of things to address. Luckily Gabe is a patient guy 😉
This is a very start to this series. There is action, suspense, drama, trauma, some heartbreak, some victories and setbacks. Gabe and Nico both have trauma and they both have to work on themselves individually before they can work as a couple. I was happy to see the way these guys protected each other and cared to get things right. I felt for Nico because he really had a hard road for so many things. Gabe was such a sweetheart – especially for a trained military guy. He had a strong sense of right and wrong that cost him. He absolutely wants to do the right thing always. Getting to see his family and watch that unfold was brilliant 🙂 Bravo to the next generation. There are some wonderful New York moments and I loved seeing the D’Angelos again. I can’t wait for the next book. Recommended.
