BLURB:
“The devil wears many faces. Today, he wore the one I’ve been running from for five years.”
Five years spent running, reinventing myself at every turn, until my stepbrother finally caught up to me.
Zach Knight is cold, dangerous, and determined to make me pay for almost destroying his hockey career. But beneath that icy exterior burns something far more intense than revenge.
Now I’m back home, trying to build a future while dealing with the fierce attraction between us. Every touch, every heated glance draws me deeper into dangerous territory.
My stepbrother may be broken in ways I’m only beginning to understand, but so am I. His darkness calls to mine, and when he claims me as his, I can’t resist falling.
They say the opposite of hate is love, but with Zach Knight, the line between the two threatens to consume us both.
Falling for the forbidden titan was never part of the plan.
But neither was becoming his salvation.
REVIEW:
This whole series has been a kind of rollercoaster ride. You do have to suspend your beliefs a bit, but if you are able to do that, the stories are really quite good. You should really read the prior books to have a better understanding of how the crazy works in this series. I would say that the hockey aspect, while an important part of the story as far as setting the scene, they really focus on the individuals and their relationships.
Here, we have Zach, who is on the North Shore Titans. He has a number of issues, i.e. TBI from childhood, as well as other injuries sustained in an incident with his stepbrother, Merci. These issues play a major role, as Zach is unable to process feelings, both emotional and physical, as a normal person would. He hides this and uses hockey to keep himself focused and to get through life. Ironically, he hides these things in order to play, but it is playing that he uses as a crutch for dealing with them.
Then, there is Merci, who has his own issues stemming from past abuse from his father. When he and Zach are thrown together, it doesn’t go over very well. The lack of communication by their now parents as to their issues keeps them in the dark of understanding what is going on with each other or why they are behaving the way they are. This escalates into an altercation that changes the course of their lives, injures Zach and sends Merci on the run for 5 years.
Hellbent on revenge, Zach tracks Merci down and kidnaps him with the intention of murder, but that plan is thwarted and they are somewhat forced to face their attraction and feelings. The transformation happens rather quickly in the scheme of things, but once it starts, there isn’t really much that’s going to stop it. Eventually, everything comes to light, and there isn’t anything holding them back. They become exactly what each other needs, and with the help of their friends, they are able to really face their issues and make some improvements.
This story ends on a somewhat happy for now state, as Zach is off to development camp in the hopes of being drafted into the NHL, while Merci is finishing school and rediscovering his love of silk acrobatics. I’m not sure if this is the end of this series or not, as it really didn’t give an idea of who might still have a story to tell, but should there be another one coming, I’ll not hesitate to add it to my list.
