Nolan O’Brien is a public prosecutor, and if he ever sees the name Bruno Barbieri again, it will be too soon. After a long week preparing for the trial of the decade, it takes no convincing to hit the men’s club for a few drinks.
Except the club wasn’t the only thing he hit that night.
Benji Smith works on Wylde Street as a rent boy. When he’s chased by two men, he runs into the path of a moving car. With a no-cops, no-hospital policy and needing to escape the men following him, he agrees to go back to the driver’s place.
The last thing Nolan expects is to offer Benji a place to stay, to recuperate, and to lie low. And the last thing Benji expects is to be attracted to the man who saved him.
But their worlds are about to collide in a way neither of them was prepared for, and both men need to decide what’s at stake, what they’re prepared to lose, and what they’ll fight for.
REVIEW:
I have absolutely loved everything I’ve ever read from NR Walker. Some of my top books of all times come from her and they live rent free in my mind and are part of the very small list of books I’ve actually re-read ever. They always give me layered complex characters, a romantic plot that’s ultra swoony and satisfyingly angsty. Deep moments of stillness and fast action and a ton of emotional depth smoothly blending to tell a wonderful tale while journeying into Australia. So when I saw that the author was coming out with a new series I was super excited to give it a go. To be honest I loved a lot of it and what didn’t work for me isn’t necessarily what won’t work for others.
Nolan, a prosecutor, on his way home from a gentlemen’s club ends up hitting Benji with his car. Benji is a s3x worker who works a street corner and is on the run .. from something that isn’t immediately revealed, this plot thickens with Benji’s background and circumstances which also are kept vaguely referenced and mysterious. Nolan, without having any details beyond the obvious, burdened under guilt for hitting poor Benji offers him a week’s refuge. The chemistry ofcourse is instantaneous and it takes less than a day for Benji to initiate s3x which is mind blowing for them both. I think what threw me off is that less than a minute is spent on Benji’s motivation and even less on how reconciled he is with his job and his current life.
On the second one it just says he loves his work – nothing wrong with that but it felt like it downplays the lack of regulation, oversight and danger associated- it also completely negates what he says about not even having enough money to eat two meals a day, an existence like that where he relies heavily on his safety coming form two best friends in the same profession and how drugs and drug related crimes are rampant around him. It felt downplayed for me. Sometimes his sunshiney outlook took a pendulum swing hinting at him not even being sure he’ll stay alive. So the sudden shifts from light to dark threw me a bit.
On the first where his motivation is concerned there is no build up just that he says he needs a lot of sex .. for reasons.. – again nothing wrong with that it’s just the way it’s written with unmanageable urges, felt fated mates or omegaverse almost and let me clarify – it is a contemporary romance, not omegaverse at all. What it is is SUPER HOT!!. By the middle of it, even if only 2-3 days have passed you are primed to expect the insta love.
Also the reveals when they eventually come are spectacular even though you’re expecting them. I really enjoyed myself reading this story.
However, the author obviously has an epic talent for telling a story and it’s a quick read and engaging and you sort of run through it fast and it’s a feel good story with good bones, I just feel like a lot was left untold and I felt like I needed more from it!
