I’ve always been a sucker for a guy with muscles and a handsome face. If that makes me sound shallow, maybe I am. I’ve never had a real relationship, unless you consider the guys in my Marine Corps Recon unit. I had a great relationship with those guys. Yeah, yeah, I know we’re splitting hairs. These days, long after my retirement from active duty, the only kind of relationships I really do now are with fictional characters.
I love to read, and lately, I’ve been frequenting the pages of my favorite blog, Bestreads, to escape my real-life job, one I’m not very well suited for. One reviewer on there—Nightcrawler—absolutely slays me. He always makes me laugh, steering me clear of some of the worst trash out there when I’m not trying to earn money as a bounty hunter. Maybe someday the right man will come along, and he won’t simply be a book boyfriend.
Someday.
REVIEW:
A new action series from a long-time favorite author, Patricia Logan, that includes some of my all-time favorite characters from her Death and Destruction series and others! Win/Win for me!!!
Miguel “Trigg” Huerta is a former Recon Marine that is now a fugitive recovery agent. Some might call him a bounty hunter but he gets to chose what he calls himself. After losing a huge bounty that would make him flush again he can’t believe his luck that Raven Mathis, who is recovery agent for Grayson, Mallory, and Simms Insurance, the firm that offered that massive bounty for recovering the Mulberry Diamond. And 6 months later he is after another big payout and Mathis is here again. But Trigg has to get this payout or he and his sweet kitten Stanley will be homeless. When the two windup teaming together it’s a good thing Trigg is there when gunshots are fired and Raven is hit. Nursing the stunning beauty shows Miguel two thing: 1) Raven isn’t what he thought he was and 2) Miguel is falling fast for the man that is beautiful both inside and out!
I am already hooked on these two men and this series. The final hook that grabbed me is the fact that Raven is a book reviewer for a book blog. I was mesmerized. I’ve had books where a writer writes about writers but never has a reviewer been featured in a book in the almost ten years since I have been doing this. It was so cool. I loved all the reviews and the humor throughout them. Especially the books that he literally DNF because they were soooo bad. But his humorous way he wrote the reviews actually could tempt someone into reading them possibly! Nightcrawler was an inspiration.
The next part that cemented this book/series for me was the addition of Cassidy Ryan and Mike Williams. Knowing that they had such an important part in Miguel turning into the person he is was special. Cassidy was literally a rookie cop and Mike his training officer when they were first on the scene to Miguel’s parents murder when he was in high school. They never forgot the young man and made it their mission to make sure he stayed out of trouble and on the right path. They are still there for him and have become his family. Miguel never wants to disappoint these two important men in his life.
Then the icing on the cake for me was when my Thayne and Jarrett got brought in to help on a case. I have missed them so much and loved that we got to see and catch up a bit with them. I appreciated that they didn’t steal Miguel and Raven’s story but enhanced it. And getting to seeing Jarrett being Jarrett again was a true treat. We even got a bit with our favorite red-headed giant “Mac Mac Mac”! Those men will help out when you need them and Jarrett is always able to bring a bit of humor to any situation no matter how dire. But Thayne still had his way of keeping his husband in line…although barely at times! I’m sure some days Jarrett sides are a bit bruised and sore when Thayne has to constantly remind him to be good.
I can’t wait for the next book and thankfully it’s due out soon. I know I’m a bit late to the party this time but it means I’m ready and up to speed when Miguel and Raven strike out on their own!
