A potential witness for the prosecution can’t explore his lusty feelings for the sheriff who saved him, but that doesn’t stop his imagination from running wild. When the delay threatens to stretch on for years, Rueben feels his dreams slipping out of reach. Should he surrender or fight for his man?
Pressure and scrutiny are nothing new to Seth, but shouldering his duties has never felt like a burden until they keep him from the man he wants. Cracking an unsolved murder, safeguarding a high-profile trial, and winning re-election should be enough to keep him busy. But he can’t stop thinking about the weekend he shared with Rueben. Are they as good together as Seth remembers, or is his memory swayed by the allure of the forbidden?
Late-night phone calls and shared secrets lead to a lakeside cabin rendezvous. But one encounter isn’t enough, and the two men will risk everything to explore their bond. When a series of chilling events rock the county, Rueben and Seth must put more than their hearts on the line because one misstep could prove fatal.

REVIEW:
Note: This is the fifth book in this series and there are spoilers for the previous books.
Whoooeee! This is a bit of a wild ride TBH. For fans of this series, waiting for Seth and Rueben to get together has been a little bit of a torture. But with the case against the Salvation Anew cult for which Rueben is a material witness, it’s very tricky. They’ve waited months after their scorching weekend when they discover that the trial could still take years! This is just too much.
So Rueben and Seth begin seeing each other clandestinely at Seth’s cabin that he’s inherited. They try to be stealthy about it, but there are suspicions. In the meantime Seth is also running for re-election and his opponent is a real jerk. And if that wasn’t enough, Seth’s ex comes back to town sniffing around to cover the story of the biggest trial in forever with the leaders of the Salvation Anew cult leaders – for the robberies, attempted murder and the abuse that Keegan, an escapee from the cult and Rueben’s good friend, suffered at their hands.
Seth and Rueben are fire together and they are tired of waiting. Then another string of events are kicked off around the cult leaders that really ratchet things up. Can Seth and Rueben really be together? Will the county except that the Sheriff is with an ex-con? Will the trial be tainted and Keegan and Rueben will not get justice? You’ll have to listen to find out.
Man this story! I’ve been waiting for these two for a while. They are absolutely perfect for each other but they have a lot of obstacles to overcome. I was worried at one point that there was too much going against them. Poor Keegan! Rueben wants to do the right thing for everyone. Luckily things turn around with a whole lot of twists and turns! Also I can’t wait for the next book with Keegan getting his own man 😉 Plenty of foreshadowing in this book and I’m there for it!
Lance West does a terrific job here with a very large cast of characters. Every voice was distinct and perfecting performed. I loved Seth’s growly demeanor. Rueben is so determined! Keegan so vulnerable. Olly so annoying 😉 This series is a winner and I’m so glad there are at least two more books coming! Enjoy this highly recommended addition to this series in audio if you can. It’s worth it.
