Exclusive Excerpt for The Family Fortune:
I’m not around them enough to remember the three men by name, and barely by sight, but Julie saved my life when my biological psycho-rapist-murderer father blackmailed me into meeting him and tried to kidnap me.
Wow, my family is really not normal, are we?
“I suppose you should pay your respects, piccolina,” Nonno says, gesturing to the open casket at the head of the room, suspended on a dias and surrounded by flowers.
I grimace, but that is why I am here. I need to be seen at the funeral, sign the registry, and ensure I can at least have the inheritance on hold for me.
Until I get married. Which may cause more issues than anything else.
My men stay behind me as I walk to the casket and see my maternal grandmother for the very first time in my life.
First real life look at her, and she’s a corpse. Not many people can say that.
She looks like the one photograph Mom had but shriveled. Her jowls sag, her neck sags, her arms in the black dress she’s wearing are sagging. Her face is set in a scowl; usually undertakers make the corpse look peaceful. I don’t think this lady could look anything but pissed off. They tried to fix that with makeup, but she looks like a painted clown from Hell.
“Goodbye, you old hag,” I comment, glaring. I make the Sign of the Cross over her like a good Catholic. “Hope Hell is hot enough for you.”
Uncle Tony chokes back a laugh, and Daddy nudges him, just within my line of sight.
I turn on my heel and sign the registry before exiting the visiting hall, my dutiful, wonderful men in tow. The man who runs the funeral home nods to me, and I politely nod back, but barely pay attention to him.
Maybe it is all the emotion, but I feel … crazy. A good kinda crazy. Julie already got her inheritance despite it being noted she’s technically married to three men as well, and my first look at my grandmother was her overly made up, saggy, pale corpse.
I need my emotions centered, and for me, there is only one way to do that.
“Where are you leading us, tesoro?” Uncle Tony asks.
I’m not sure. I’ll know it when I see it.
And then I do see it. A chapel open as a display, for mourners to visit and see what a basic funeral/wake setup looks like. No one is in here, as it’s Sunday, and they don’t do bookings on Sundays on account of needing staff to be available for the funerals and the families.
I grab Daddy, who is closest to me, and drag him into the room, and the other two men, of course, follow.
“Shut the door, please,” I tell Nonno, who is in the rear.
“Tesoro…” Uncle Tony’s voice has a hint of warning in it but also amusement.
“Oh, tell me you’re not thinking…” Daddy trails off as he watches me hop onto the top of the closed gray casket in the display room.
I eye each of my men and say, “I don’t care which of you, or if all of you do it, someone is getting me off right here, right now.”
“Bossy all of a sudden, isn’t she?” Uncle Tony comments.
“Maybe we should show her what ordering us around does,” Daddy muses.
