In a thrilling alternate-universe Seattle, empaths are disappearing—and it’s up to grumpy Reece and his mysterious protector, Grayson, to investigate.
Empath hunter Evan Grayson is the Dead Man, transformed by a dark past into a perfect weapon against corrupted empaths. Nothing can distract him from stopping these superhuman killers—until he’s mired in a new battle, fighting a forbidden attraction to an empath on the verge of corruption.
For pacifist Reece Davies, every day is a struggle to keep his darker side in check. It’s only his complicated relationship with Evan that keeps him grounded—a relationship that, despite his growing feelings, must stay at arm’s length. But when an empath’s murder on the East Coast points to a treacherous plot back west, with Reece as the next potential target, Evan races across the country to be by his side.
Together, they search for missing empaths, their proximity heightening the chemistry they must resist. But corruption isn’t the only danger they face as sinister forces close in from the shadows, sights set on empath and empath hunter alike…
REVIEW:
This is the second book in the series and one I was hotly anticipating, and I wasn’t disappointed. The mystery, the tension, angst and suspense are all integral to this book.
Reece is deeply committed to non-violence, which often puts him at odds with the darker aspects of the world he inhabits. He has an inner struggle to keep his darker impulses in check, making his character complex and layered. Reece’s empathy and kindness are central to his character, driving his actions and interactions with others. Despite his pacifist nature, Reece is determined and courageous, willing to face danger to protect others and seek justice. The real-life consequences to any empath who sees or faces violence is clearly narrated and forms a central part of the plot.
Evan is an Empath Hunter, known as the Dead Man, Evan has a reputation for being a relentless and skilled hunter, which gives him a somewhat intimidating presence. Everyone knows about him, but no-one knows him, his background and what he has endured. He has strong protective instincts, especially towards Reece, which highlight his loyalty and commitment, but with a strong background vibe of doing what is necessary, even if that includes Reece, he won’t shy away from what needs to be done. Evan maintains a stoic and reserved demeanour, masking his deeper emotions and vulnerability. He is resilient and resourceful, able to adapt to challenging situations and find solutions.
This book continues with their will they, won’t they relationship, which faces multiple barriers. Reece’s pacifist nature clashes with Evan’s role as an empath hunter. Their differing views on violence and justice create tension and complicates their relationship. Given Evan’s intimidating reputation as the Dead Man, Reece initially struggles to trust him, leading to misunderstandings and guarded interactions. Both characters have difficulty expressing their true feelings and vulnerabilities. The ongoing danger of empath disappearances and the looming threat against Reece add stress and urgency to their interactions, making it difficult to build a stable relationship. Their undeniable chemistry conflicts with their need to resist their growing attraction to focus on the mission at hand.
Overcoming these barriers requires both characters to confront their fears, communicate openly, and find common ground despite their differences. It’s a journey of mutual growth and understanding that deepens their bond and strengthens their connection.
The highlight of the book for me, is the intense and captivating relationship developing between Reece and Evan against the backdrop of a gripping magical mystery. Their journey from conflict and mistrust to understanding and deep emotional connection is both heartwarming and thrilling. The blending of paranormal elements with a slow-burn romance kept me on the edge of my seat. I really enjoyed the vivid world-building and intricate plot twists add layers of depth, making the book an engaging and memorable read. I can’t wait for the next book in the series.
