BLURB:
A demon who punishes evildoers. A fastidious goat. What could they possibly have in common? Well, duh—nothing. Except Fate has other ideas.
When his friend Dakata needs help, Merihem—the ‘controller’ for the demon and human realm—charges in headfirst without thinking about the consequences. For his trouble, he’s cast up to the human realm and forced to take over Dakata’s business and his home, all the while figuring out how to get back into the good graces of the king.
When he meets a small excitable goat—his ‘blissful one’—life really gets interesting.
Peni left his home and got himself a cleaning job, where his only sanctuary is in the basement. Until a very large, naked demon invades his place of work, claiming he and Peni are ‘blissful ones’. Yeah right. Except now, his goat half is acting up, the real housekeeper is angry with him, and he’s clueless how to make his giant invader understand that when one of them is tiny, size really does matter.
And then there’s the trifling inconvenience of someone trying to hurt them.
If they can survive all that, then maybe—just maybe—the universe got it right after all.
REVIEW:
No good deed goes unpunished is how Merihem feels, after coming to help Dakota, he faces the wrath of his king and sent topside as a punishment. Dakota gives him his home and business to look after and then the fun begins. Merihem is a powerful demon who takes his role as a controller seriously. He’s strong, authoritative, and used to being in control. However, his time in the human realm challenges him and reveals a more vulnerable side as he navigates unfamiliar territory.
Peni is a tiny goat shifter who finds solace in order and cleaning, he has been given the job of cleaning Dakota’s house, and is sleeping in the basement, undetected by anyone, he keeps to himself, he knows he shouldn’t be sleeping in the house but he has nowhere else to go. He’s endearing and finds comfort in his routines, but Merihem’s arrival turns his world upside down. Despite the chaos, Peni’s resilience and adaptability shine through as he forms an unexpected bond with Merihem.
Thus begins a game of cat and mouse, or rather demon and goat. Merihem knows his blissful one is in the house, he just has to find him. Peni, knows the demon is looking for him but if he can just slip out the window he’ll be fine.
Merihem and Peni face several barriers in their relationship, Merihem comes from a demon realm with its own rules and norms, while Peni is rooted in the human world. Their differing backgrounds create misunderstandings and conflict. As a powerful demon, Merihem is used to control and authority, which can be intimidating for Peni. They must navigate and balance these dynamics to build mutual respect. Both characters carry their own fears and insecurities, which they must address and overcome to fully trust and accept one another. Despite these barriers, their relationship grows stronger as they learn to appreciate each other’s uniqueness and support one another. It’s a journey filled with humor, challenges, and growth!
Despite being so different they manage to build a successful relationship by understanding each other’s backgrounds, feelings, and perspectives. This helps bridge the gap between their vastly different worlds. Both characters show patience and flexibility, adapting to the changes and challenges that come with their unique relationship. They develop mutual respect, acknowledging each other’s strengths and vulnerabilities. This is crucial for balancing the power dynamics between them, they confront external obstacles as a team. Both Merihem and Peni overcome their insecurities and fears. They find moments of humour and support each other through tough times, which adds resilience and joy to their relationship.
As they start getting to know each other and overcome their initial difficulties in their relationship, it becomes apparent that there are threats which require Merihem and Peni to unite and work together. Merihem’s power and experience as a demon, combined with Peni’s cleverness and resilience, make them a formidable team.
I really enjoyed this book particularly liked the interaction between Peni and the King, he appeared to be gruff, with a temper but Peni’s interactions with the King are fun, though challenging for Peni, given the vast difference in their statuses. As a humble and excitable goat, Peni initially finds himself overwhelmed by the King’s powerful presence. However, with Merihem by his side, he navigates these encounters with a mix of nervous energy and unexpected courage.
Peni’s resilience and adaptability come into play as he learns to stand his ground, even in the face of such an intimidating figure. His genuine nature and unique perspective often surprise the King, who is used to dealing with more formidable and cunning beings. Peni’s innocence and sincerity bring a refreshing change to the King’s interactions.
Over time, Peni’s loyalty and bravery earn the King’s respect, and his role in their world becomes more significant. It’s through these interactions that Peni grows more confident and assertive, showcasing his inner strength.
