The greatest lies are the ones we tell ourselves.
Adam Dawson never thought he’d meet someone like Caleb Straus. Three months of friendship with his new partner has made Adam take a good look at his life, and he doesn’t like what he sees. The safety he finds with Caleb is the only thing holding him together, but it’s also the thing that might rip his world to shreds.
Caleb wasn’t ready for Adam either, and the bond they’ve formed has grown exponentially over time. It’s intense and gratifying in a way he’s craved for years, but also the biggest problem in his life.
To complicate things further, the body of the County Sheriff’s son, Keola Antu, shows up in a Peyton field.
As the they investigate who’s responsible, they discover the case offers more than they bargained for. For every answer there’s another question just behind it. Everyone has something to hide, and the deeper they dig, the closer to home it hits.
With their foundations shaken, the men face a crossroads that’ll shape their chances at a life together. But when old habits rear their heads, will they both find the strength to make the hard choices? Or will the damage of their pasts that once brought them together, tear them apart?
TW: Suicidal ideations. Alcohol and prescription drug addiction. Cheating (Not between main characters.)
REVIEW:
Disclaimer: This is the second book in the Restitution series, and you must read book one. I must also reiterate the trigger warning for this book – it is a tough, gritty look at real life, and I really recommend you read the trigger warnings before you dive into this book.
Ok let me just say that I was not disappointed with this book. I freaking loved it. I didn’t want to put this book down, but I did need sleep. I am not sure what it is about Caleb and Adam, but these two pull so hard at my heart strings. I just want to wrap them up and let them know it will be ok in the end – not that I really know that. But these two so need a happy ending, which I hope they get.
Once again, the world building is spectacular. This small-town universe has really sucked me in. Her main characters continue to evolve and become more attuned to the things they need to change or maintain. Let me just say, the side characters are not immune from the ups and downs either. We definitely get a better picture of what Adam is dealing with when Josh comes to visit him. Is it wrong to want to shove a Jimmy Choo stiletto up a part of Joshes anatomy? IMO, the writing in this story is by far the best yet. B. H. just elicits the strongest of emotions with her writing and I am loving every minute of it. And we can’t forget about the underlying plot building either. She weaves a wonderfully complicated mystery – that let’s be honest, I didn’t see that ending coming.
Will Adam reconcile with Josh? Will Caleb be able to resist Adam? Who killed Keola Antu? Well, I’m not going to spoil it for you. I highly recommend this book, which means you need to run to your favorite eBook purchasing site and grab this one up and enjoy the wild ride that is Readjustment. One final note, this one does end on a cliffhanger. *Rubs hands together gleefully* I can’t wait for the next book, how bout you…
